Job Description

Custodian for the
Boyton Street Community Center Description:
The position of Custodian is a non-union, non-exempt position for the City of Marion. The individual appointed to this position will be assigned to Boyton Street Community Center. Compensation and benefits for this position will be determined by the Mayor and City Council. A normal shift will vary based on the center's programming schedule as there may be circumstances where the custodian will work later in the evening and on weekends as the demands of the job determine. The Custodian will be responsible for cleanliness and upkeep of the building and grounds. While higher maintenance issues such as plumbing and heating cooling will be hired by professionals, the Custodian shall be responsible for lighter routine jobs. There are prepared guidelines that the Custodian shall follow in regard to cleanliness as well as public health guidelines, which will be directed by the Executive Director of the community center. The Custodian will come in daily contact with program participants and renters and will work closely with the Executive Director and Program Coordinator. It is important that he/she be able to work without constant supervision and maintain a pleasant and professional demeanor.
I. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Perform daily "walk through" to check building for housekeeping issues & safety
  • Make initial contact with subcontractors that are responsible for equipment maintenance
  • Make minor repairs on walls, doors, locks, tables and chairs, etc.
  • Oversee preventative maintenance on all fire extinguishers & alarms
  • Ensure cleanliness of building
  • Schedule special maintenance projects for the building as needed
  • Clean all tables and chairs and all other furniture on a regular basis
  • Keep cleaning materials in good condition, replacing when necessary
  • Keep carpets vacuumed and furniture sprayed with Lysol for germ prevention
  • Clean carpets, using professional carpet cleaner
  • Check furnace/air conditioning filters for cleanliness
  • Change filter in ice machine, when/if needed
  • Strip and wax floors, buff as needed
  • Keep inventory of all cleaning and maintenance supplies, tools, and equipment
  • Sweep dirt and snow at entrances to avoid slips/trips of patrons
  • Keep ceiling vents and air filters dusted
  • Cooperate with rest of staff and help out when necessary
  • Clean out and replace, when necessary, mops and buckets
  • Must be able to make him/herself available during disasters
Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or work equivalent
  • Have some experience in cleaning industry
  • Work well with other employees and the public
  • Must be empathetic to unique problems and issues of program participants
  • Must be able to work alone without constant supervision
  • Must have the physical ability to perform the duties required including ability to lift 50 pounds several times within a typical work day
  • Must work on his/her feet for prolonged periods
  • Must be able to use professional cleaning equipment, such as buffers and carpet cleaners
  • Must have basic knowledge of tools used for repair and construction
  • Must be able to work from heights of 10 or more feet, as on a ladder
  • Must be able to work with special hours required for special events or disasters Must complete post-offer of employment requirements such as drug/alcohol screening, physical and residency requirements per Employee Handbook and the CANTS screening.
Compensation and Hours of Work:
$15.50-16.50 per hour. Hours will be set by Supervisor.
