Job Description
The Custodial and Maintenance team member serves the St. Louis Academy community and parish by caring for both school and church facilities with pride, attention, and a spirit of service. This role directly supports our values of Faith, Learning, and Culture by helping maintain environments that reflect dignity, hospitality, and respect for God's creation. The ideal candidate understands that their work, while often behind the scenes, plays an essential role in forming students, supporting parish life, and sustaining the daily operations of both the school and the church. Hours will vary slightly, but 8 hours daily with a 30 minute unpaid lunch.
Responsibilities Faithful Stewardship of Our School Environment:
Clean and sanitize classrooms, hallways, restrooms, and common areas daily, with particular care for high-touch surfaces, recognizing that maintaining a healthy environment supports student learning and well-being. Care for

Perform minor repairs such as basic plumbing, light electrical work, and furniture repair, ensuring our learning spaces remain safe, functional, and welcoming. Safety & Well-Being of the
Community:
Conduct daily inspections of the building and playground to identify hazards and support the physical safety of students and staff. Ensure the school is properly secured at the end of each day. Support for
Learning & Community Life:
Assist with set-up and tear-down for school Masses, prayer services, assemblies, academic events, and family gatherings that strengthen our Catholic identity and school culture.
Grounds & Seasonal Care:
Complete seasonal outdoor tasks such as snow removal and general grounds cleanup, demonstrating stewardship of the property entrusted to our care.
Responsible Resource Management:
Monitor, organize, and reorder cleaning and maintenance supplies in a timely and responsible manner. Qualifications & Skills Experience & Willingness to
Learn:
Experience with commercial cleaning equipment and basic hand and power tools preferred. Floor cleaning experience preferred. Willingness to obtain certification in pesticide and weed-killer application is required.
Physical Requirements:
Stamina & Mobility:
Sustained walking, standing, and running, often for an entire shift, without fatigue.
Lifting & Carrying:
Regularly lifting, pushing, or pulling items, with requirements often ranging from 25 up to 100 lbs.
Flexibility & Agility:
Frequent bending, twisting, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling to clean corners, under furniture, or in tight spaces.
Upper Body Strength & Dexterity:
Ability to handle, control, and manipulate cleaning tools, equipment, and materials.
Climbing:
Ability to climb ladders up to 10 feet for high cleaning tasks.
Sensory Abilities:
Good vision for identifying dirt or hazards and recognizing safety labels.
Work Environment & Conditions Equipment Operation:
Operating machinery such as buffers, vacuums, and scrubbers, which involves vibration and noise.
Safety Requirements:
Ability to use personal protective equipment (PPE) like gloves, masks, and eye protection.
Environmental Exposure:
Working in both conditioned and unconditioned indoor spaces, with occasional outdoor work. Commitment to

Education:
High school diploma or GED required; additional maintenance or trade certifications are a plus.
Safe Environment Compliance:
Must successfully pass a background check and meet all Safe Environment and employment requirements of the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend.
