Custodian Position Overview Join our growing team as a campus Custodian, where you'll play a vital role in maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for students, staff, and visitors. This position supports daily campus operations by ensuring the cleanliness and upkeep of classrooms, residence halls, common areas, and campus facilities, as well as providing event support.
Location :
This role will support a local university campus in South Bend, IN.
Schedule:
Monday - Friday, 10:00 AM - 6:30 PM ET (with occasional evening/weekend support for events) Reports to: Facilities Manager Key Responsibilities Campus Cleanliness & Maintenance Clean and maintain assigned areas including but not limited to classrooms, lecture halls, restrooms, dormitory halls, lobbies, lounges, offices, and other high-traffic spaces Perform general cleaning tasks including but not limited to sweeping, mopping, dusting, vacuuming, and disinfecting surfaces Clean and prepare vacant dorm rooms/units during student move-outs to ensure readiness for incoming residents Empty trash and recycling bins regularly and dispose of waste per guidelines Ensure cleanliness of outdoor entryways, walkways, and areas surrounding trash/recycling stations Support seasonal campus cleaning projects such as move-in/move-out and semester turnover Inventory & Safety Compliance Monitor custodial and restroom supply levels; restock and notify supervisor when orders are needed Track and handle cleaning products safely in accordance with instructions and Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) Operate and maintain cleaning equipment such as floor buffers, carpet cleaners, and pressure washers Follow all safety procedures, use protective equipment, and report hazards, leaks, or damage immediately Event Set-Up & Support Assist with event preparation including setting up tables, chairs, podiums, and other equipment Provide custodial support during and after events, including cleaning and returning spaces to standard setup Coordinate with campus staff to ensure event spaces are ready and maintained Collaboration & Communication Communicate clearly with supervisors, facilities team, and coworkers to ensure coordinated operations Assist other departments or respond to property needs as requested Maintain a courteous and respectful approach when interacting with students, faculty, staff, and visitors Qualifications Education & Experience High school diploma or equivalent required 1 year of custodial, janitorial, or facilities experience preferred (education or campus setting is a plus) Skills & Competencies Knowledge of cleaning products, proper usage, and storage Physically able to lift and move items up to 50 lbs Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions Ability to work both independently and as part of a team Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative environment Excellent customer service and communication skills Why Join Our Team?
