Amherst College invites applications for the Maintainer position (multiple openings). The Maintainer is a full-time, year-round position. The expected salary range for this job opportunity is: $19.64 to $20.25 per hour. The salary offered will vary based on a number of factors, including but not limited to relevant education, training, and experience, tenure status, and other nondiscriminatory business considerations. The Dining Services Maintainer supports Amherst College Dining Services by maintaining safe, clean, orderly, and sanitary conditions across dining facilities, including common areas, restrooms, and dining-specific spaces. This role is essential to ensuring a welcoming and functional environment that supports the daily dining experience of a diverse campus community. Working both independently and collaboratively, the Dining Services Maintainer performs routine and detailed cleaning tasks, monitors facility conditions, and responds to operational needs during and after service. This position serves as a steward of Dining Services spaces by maintaining cleanliness standards, identifying and communicating maintenance or safety concerns, and supporting the overall functionality of dining operations. All Dining Services employees are responsible for understanding and implementing established food safety procedures and allergen prevention protocols. Team members must actively support and respond appropriately to individuals with food allergies to ensure a safe dining experience for all community members. Employees are expected to apply the knowledge and procedures covered in mandatory training sessions in the course of their daily duties. Maintaining these safety standards is essential to protect the health and well-being of our students, guests, and colleagues.
Summary of Responsibilities:
Custodial Services & Sanitation Performs general custodial duties to maintain safe, clean, orderly, and sanitary conditions in dining areas, restrooms, and adjacent service spaces. Cleans and disinfects high-touch surfaces, restrooms, dining areas, floors, and equipment in accordance with established procedures and health standards. Manages waste removal, including trash, recycling, and compost, following proper handling and disposal procedures. Maintains compliance with environmental health and safety standards, including proper use and handling of cleaning chemicals. Facility Stewardship & Monitoring Serves as a steward of Dining Services spaces by routinely inspecting areas for cleanliness, safety, and maintenance needs. Identifies and reports facility, equipment, or safety concerns promptly and accurately. Supports supply inventory by monitoring stock levels of cleaning materials and restroom supplies. Promotes energy awareness by monitoring lighting and equipment use where appropriate. Operational & Event Support Supports dining operations during service by responding to spills, hazards, and immediate cleaning needs. Assists with setup, breakdown, and general upkeep of dining and event spaces as needed. Provides support for special events and high-volume service periods. Teamwork, Communication & Inclusion Communicates effectively with supervisors and team members regarding operational needs and priorities. Works collaboratively with Dining Services and campus partners to support daily operations Professional, hospitality-focused interactions with students, parents, faculty, and staff. Takes appropriate actions to support a diverse workforce and contributes to a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming work environment. Safety & Compliance Follows all safety procedures, including proper use of cleaning chemicals, equipment, and personal protective equipment (PPE). Maintains awareness of food safety and allergen protocols within dining environments.
Qualifications:
Required High School Diploma or equivalent. 1 to 3 years of related experience. Equivalent work experience in lieu of minimum education and related experience; 1 to 3 years of food service experience. Ability to work efficiently in a high-traffic, fast-paced environment. Basic knowledge of custodial or cleaning practices, or willingness to learn. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and safety procedures. Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining sanitation standards. Effective communication, organizational, and time management skills. Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment. Commitment to working with a diverse and inclusive community. Ability to safely handle cleaning chemicals and equipment. Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and extended shifts. Preferred Previous custodial or cleaning experience, preferably in a high-volume or institutional setting. Familiarity with cleaning equipment, sanitation standards, and environmental health and safety practices. Experience supporting events or working in multi-use facilities.
