Job Description
GENERAL SUMMARY
Performs custodial work insuring the overall appearance, cleanliness, safety and security of the School Facility. Under the direction of the Facilities Department leadership & School Head Custodian the custodian is responsible for the efficient completion & cleanliness of assigned work. Make occasional contact with contractors. Performs task to maintain the cleanliness and upkeep of School facility; assists with set-up and break-down of activities at the school and other various assignments to support the Facilities Department and the School staff.
Candidates must be able to perform all the duties associated with the non-head custodial position, including, but not limited, to the following: The Head Custodian works independently under the general supervision of the Facilities Director and is responsible for the direction of the Custodians within his/her assigned school to ensure the timely completion of their assigned tasks.
The Head Custodian and the custodians under his/her supervision shall be responsible for the cleanliness and maintenance of the total school building and grounds.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Maintains inventory control, stores custodial/maintenance materials for SchoolMaintains the cleanliness and maintenance of assigned School as directed by the Facilities Director or their designees. Checks and cleans restrooms for cleanlinessReplenishes restroom products as needed and wipes and washes down stalls and bathroom fixturesSweeps hallways, classrooms, cafeterias, offices, gymnasiums, and storage areasWashs walls, doors and doorways, windows and frames, glass cases, and other areas as directedVacuums all rugs and shampoos rugs as directeddusts windowsills, bannisters, above cases, lights etc. throughout facilitiesChecks cleanliness of meeting rooms after eventsRemove trash and recyclingReturns rooms to proper condition after cleaningResponds to maintenance work requestsUtilizes work order system to document work completedEnsures compliance with School recycling, composting and wasteAssists with the set-up and breakdown for scheduled eventsMoves furniture, equipment and supplies as directedPerforms minor carpentry, painting and repairs on equipment and buildings as requestedPerforms yearly summertime clean up and new school year building preparationsMopping, stripping and waxing of various flooring systems-Responds to emergency calls and after hours call backsPerforms bi-annual uninvent filter and belt changes (once in the summer, once in the winter)Assembles furniture and equipmentPerforms school grounds and building health and safety checksPerforms school grounds and building security checks- Performs all other related duties as assigned or requestedAssist with and performs work related to snow and ice operations, including but not limited to shoveling sidewalks, stairs and walkwaysMaintenance and cleanup of school grounds including remove of leaves in door entryways
PREPARATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
Working knowledge of basic methods, practice and work standards relating to the custodial care of buildings, fixtures and equipment.
Knowledgeable of the operation and maintenance of standard custodial machines and equipment, including but not limited to buffers, burnishers, scrubbing and stripping machines, carpet extractors, vacuums, of all kinds, snow blowers etc.
Knowledge of housekeeping procedures, methods of cleaning skills and able to instruct others on these skills.
Working knowledge of fundamental maintenance proceduresAbility to operate and manipulate various equipment under all-weather conductions.
Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions in assigned areasMinor carpentry skillsMathematical development sufficient to be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide all units of measure.
Must be organized and able to complete tasks with minimal instruction and reminders.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written direction.
Ability to use and apply word processing, spreadsheets, email and other computer technology.
Ability to lift and carry heavy objects, 65 lbs. min; ability to climb and work on ladders and scaffolds; ability to work in foul weather environmentsEnters time off in the District Absentee Management Software System
REQUIREMENTS
Demonstrated aptitude for successful completion of the tasks assignedSuch alternative to the above qualifications as Superintendent or designee may find appropriate and acceptableHigh school diploma or GED required3-5 Years experience as a custodian for a school district preferredExhibit ability, knowledge, technical skills and expertise to successfully perform required duties.
Valid MA Class D drivers licenseKnowledge and skills in using a wide range of equipment and tools as needed to perform the jobAble to maintain relations with co-workers, other school departments and outside contractors
