JOB DESCRIPTIONJob Goals:
1.To provide students with a safe, attractive, comfortable, clean and efficient place in which to learn, play, and develop2.To maintain the physical school plant in a condition of operating excellence so that full educational use of them may be made at all times
Supervision:
Reports to the Head Custodian and the
Facilities DirectorExperience and Training:
1.High school diploma or G.E.D. required2.Prior experience as a school custodian or the equivalent preferred3.Massachusetts drivers license required4.Ability to work effectively as part of a large custodial team5.Must be able to comprehend and follow verbal and written instruction appropriate to custodial activities6.Middle School Custodians must hold Pool Operator Certification7.Alternatives to the above qualifications as the Director of Facilities may find appropriate
Performance Responsibilities:
1.Keep building and premises clean at all times2.Shovel, snow blow and/or sand walks, and steps, as appropriate3.Check daily to ensure that all exit doors are open and all panic bolts are working properly during the hours of building occupancy4.Raise and lower the United States flag at appropriate times, if needed5.Sweep classrooms daily and dust furniture, chalkboards, vacuum rugs, etc.6.Clean corridors after school each day7.Scrub, wash down, and disinfect toilet floors daily, and clean all sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains daily8.Wash all windows9.Keep all floors in a clean and attractive condition and in a good state of preservation10.Make minor building repairs11.Report all major repairs needed promptly to his/her immediate supervisor, who will inform the Facilities Director12.Report immediately to his/her supervisor any damage to school property13.Remain on the school premises during school hours, and during non-school hours when the use of the building has been authorized and his/her attendance is required by the Facilities Director or Head Custodian14.Assume responsibility for the opening and/or closing of the building each day and for determining, before leaving, that all doors and windows are secured, and all lights, except those left on for safety or other reasons, are turned off15.Conduct an ongoing program of general maintenance, upkeep and repair, including a summer cleaning program16.Move furniture or equipment within buildings as required for various activities as directed by the Facilities Director17.Comply with local laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish, and waste18.Substitute or assist in other buildings as directed by the Facilities Director19.Conduct periodic inspections and tests of all electrical installations in the school to ensure their safe conditions20.Assume responsibility for the general security of the buildings21.Operate specialized equipment, such as floor machines and snow blowers22.Perform other duties as assigned by the

Performance of the job will be evaluated on a yearly basis by the
Facilities DirectorPhysical Requirements:
The position requires the delivery of a full range of custodial services to the public. Several hours a day will be spent walking, standing, sitting, and climbing whenever necessary. Activities include frequent physical exertion inbody movement such as reaching, bending and twisting. This position also requires frequent pulling and pushing materials and the use of hand and power tools. Occasionally, crawling may be necessary. The position requires lifting of objects of 50 pounds on a frequent basis and over 50 pounds occasionally.
Environmental Conditions:
The Custodian is required on occasion to work outdoors in extreme weather conditions such as rain, snow and hot/cold extremes. He/she is also exposed to gasoline and/or diesel fumes, cleaning chemicals, and high noise levels. The Custodian is expected to have proper weather gear, rubber gloves, and steel toe protection when necessary.
