Custodian, General
Job Summary:
The General Custodian plays a critical role in supporting student learning by maintaining a safe, clean, healthy, and welcoming school environment. Through daily custodial services, preventative maintenance, and responsive support, the General Custodian contributes to student attendance, staff productivity, community pride, and the overall educational mission of Wayland Public Schools. The General Custodian is responsible for performing routine and specialized cleaning, sanitation, facility support, and safety-related duties to ensure school buildings and grounds are maintained to high standards of cleanliness, appearance, functionality, and environmental health. Every employee contributes to the success, health, and well-being of our students. Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Not limited to):
Cleaning and Sanitization
Clean, sanitize, and disinfect classrooms, restrooms, offices, cafeterias, gyms, locker rooms, and common areas in accordance with district protocols.
Perform daily cleaning assignments according to established schedules and quality standards.
Replenish restroom, classroom, and custodial supplies.
Empty trash and recycling receptacles and properly dispose of waste materials.
Vacuum, sweep, dust mop, wet mop, scrub, and maintain all floor surfaces.
Clean windows, glass, walls, furniture, fixtures, and equipment.
Utilize approved cleaning chemicals and disinfectants in accordance with safety standards and manufacturer guidelines.
Maintain custodial closets and storage areas in a clean, organized, and safe condition.
Facility Appearance and Learning Environment Maintain a high standard of cleanliness and appearance throughout assigned areas.
Identify and address conditions that negatively impact the student learning environment.
Assist with event setup, breakdown, and facility preparations for school and community activities.
Support seasonal cleaning projects and school vacation work schedules.
Safety and Risk Management
Conduct routine inspections of assigned areas to identify safety concerns.
Report maintenance issues, hazards, vandalism, damage, or unsafe conditions promptly.
Assist with emergency response activities including weather events, spills, and building incidents.
Follow all district safety procedures, OSHA requirements, and custodial best practices.
Maintain compliance with district cleaning, sanitization, and infection-control protocols.
Customer Service and Professional Conduct
Demonstrate professionalism and positive interactions with students, staff, families, and community members.
Respond to building requests in a timely and courteous manner.
Contribute to a culture of teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Serve as a visible ambassador for Wayland Public Schools' commitment to excellence.
Qualifications
High School Diploma or equivalent.
Prior custodial, facilities, maintenance, or related experience preferred.
Ability to operate custodial equipment and cleaning machinery.
Working knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and safety procedures.
Ability to read and follow written instructions and schedules.
Ability to communicate effectively with staff and supervisors.
Physical Requirements
Frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting, reaching, climbing, and carrying.
Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds regularly and more with assistance.
Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Ability to safely operate custodial equipment and tools.
Work Environment
Work is performed in school buildings, athletic facilities, and school grounds. Duties may require evening, weekend, vacation-period, or emergency response work as assigned. Salary Range:
Commensurate with the Local Union 1116 Custodian and Maintenance Salary Scale Example:
Category I - Step 1 $22.24/hr or $46,437 annual plus over-time opportunity
Work Schedule:
2026-2027 School Year; 12-month assignment; 8 hours per day [or night shift]
