Job Goal:
The Custodian provides "Custodial Services" for the school at the direction of the Custodial Supervisor at the building. The custodian's primary responsibilities are to provide staff and students with a safe, attractive, comfortable, and clean place in which to learn, play and develop.
QUALIFICATIONS
Preferably skilled in basic custodial procedures
Ability to relate to and deal effectively with staff, teachers, students
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with children and adults
Must be able to lift and move at least 50 pounds on a regular basis
Must be able to perform job responsibilities that involve squatting, kneeling, bending, reaching, pushing, pulling, walking, climbing, carrying, and repetitive motions of arms, hands, legs, and feet.
CORI, SORI and Fingerprinting:
All appointments are conditional based on a satisfactory CORI, SORI and SAFIS Background Check per 603 CMR 51.00.
CENTRAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB

INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO
):
Performs all cleaning tasks in accordance with procedures established by the school district, evening custodial supervisor, and the building principal
Maintains adherence to district and school health and safety protocols and cleaning/sanitizing procedures
Keeps building and premises, including sidewalks, driveways and play areas neat and clean at all times.
Operates and uses snow blowers, shovels, and sands/treats walks and steps as appropriate
Checks daily to ensure that all exit doors are open and all panic devices are working properly during the hours of building occupancy
Raises and lowers the United States Flag on each school day
Cleans classrooms daily and dusts furniture
Cleans corridors after school each day and during the day when their condition requires it
Scrubs, hoses down and disinfects toilet floors daily, and cleans all sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains daily
Washes all windows on both the inside and outside at least twice each year, and more frequently if necessary
Keeps the grounds free from rubbish
Keeps all floors in a clean and attractive condition and in a good state of preservation
Cleans all chalkboards/marker boards as needed, at least once a week
Makes minor building repairs as required, such as ceiling tile replacements
Reports major repairs needed promptly to the head custodian and/or principal
Reports any damage to school property immediately to the principal Remains on the school premises during the school hours and during non-school hours when the use of the building has been authorized
Assures responsibility for the opening and/or closing of the building each school day by determining, before leaving, that all doors and windows are secured, and all lights, except those left on for safety reasons, are turned off
Keeps an inventory of supplies and equipment on hand, and requisitions such needed replacements far enough in advance so they may be delivered in such time as will not hinder the custodians in their duties
Conducts an ongoing program of general maintenance/custodial upkeep
Moves furniture, equipment, and deliveries within buildings as required for various activities as directed by the principal
Complies with local laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish and waste
Performs such duties and tasks as may be requested by the principal, director of buildings and grounds, and their designee
Changes lamps in light fixtures as needed
Makes a list of any lamps/ballast that may need changing and submit to the principal
Assists school lunch personnel as needed in receipt and movement of inventory
Uses maintenance equipment such as Auto Scrubber, Auto Burnisher, vacuum, and rug cleaner.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The employee must be able to perform job responsibilities that involve squatting, kneeling, bending, reaching, pushing, pulling, walking, climbing, carrying, and repetitive motions of arms, hands, legs, and feet. The employee is regularly required to reach with hands and arms and to sit, stoop, kneel, bend, or crouch. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to move about and will be required to traverse throughout parts of the school building and on school grounds. The employee must walk approximately 4-6 miles within the building in the course of one shift. On some occasions, it may be necessary to move quickly across even or uneven surfaces. The employee is expected to lift at least 50 lbs. The employee must frequently use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and use hand and arm strength to grasp tools and operate machinery.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
The 2nd Shift Custodian does not have supervisory responsibilities for other staff.
