Night Shift Custodian

An overnight janitor in a government building is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness, order, and security of public facilities after regular business hours. This role is critical to ensuring the building is sanitary and ready for the next day's operations, often involving specialized security protocols unique to government settings.

Core Responsibilities General Cleaning & Sanitation :

Sweep, mop, and vacuum floors in offices, courtrooms, lobbies, and hallways. High-traffic surfaces like door handles, elevator buttons, and handrails must be disinfected frequently.

Restroom Maintenance :

Thoroughly clean and sanitize toilets, sinks, and mirrors. Restock essential supplies, including paper towels, soap, and toilet tissue.

Waste Management :

Empty all trash and recycling bins, transport waste to designated disposal areas, and reline containers.

Specialty Floor Care :

: Perform heavier maintenance such as stripping, waxing, and polishing hard floors, or shampooing carpets using power equipment.

Glass and Surface Care :

Wash interior windows, glass partitions, and doors. Dust and polish office furniture, woodwork, and metal fixtures.

Facility Security :

Ensure all doors and windows are locked, set building alarms, and report any unauthorized persons or security concerns.

Government-Specific Requirements Security Clearances :

Many positions require a pre-employment background check or a federal security clearance to access restricted zones.

Compliance & Safety :

Adhere to strict environmental and safety standards, such as using EPA-registered disinfectants and following Green Seal environmental protocols.

Confidentiality :

Maintain high levels of discretion, especially when working in law enforcement or sensitive administrative settings.

Physical & Technical Skills Physical Stamina :

The ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 25-50 pounds for the duration of a shift.

Equipment Operation :

Proficiency with industrial cleaning tools like buffers, scrubbers, and heavy-duty vacuums.

Minor Repairs :

Basic maintenance tasks such as changing light bulbs, clearing minor clogs, or reporting major repair needs to supervisors.

Pay:

$15.50 - $18.80 per hour
