CUSTODIAL WORKER
(PART-TIME)CUSTODIAL WORKER
- Part-Time, 20 hours/week About theCity of Portland Parks, Recreation and Facilities Department:
The Portland Parks, Recreation, and Facilities Department is comprised of 160 full-time and over 250 seasonal staff dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in Portland, Maine. They achieve this by operating cultural venues, running community programs (including Before and After School, Swim Lessons, and Senior Adult programs), and maintaining public buildings, waterfront infrastructure, 70 parks, 40+ miles of trails, 13 cemeteries, and 30 playgrounds. Their diverse team, including Park Maintainers, Lifeguards, Event Managers, Horticulturalists, and many others, works collaboratively to provide spaces and opportunities for social connection, recreation, and community development.Job Summary:
Performs varied custodial, disinfecting, sanitizing and minor maintenance work in municipal facilities and surrounding areas.Duties & Responsibilities:
Ability to sweep, mop, scrub, polish and vacuums floors; wash walls, windows and woodwork; cleans restrooms and replenishes supplies; dusts, polishes, arranges and moves furniture and equipment; removes trash and recycling. Ability to operate or learn the operation of all cleaning machines (i.e. autoscrubber, buffer, burnisher, vacuum and other's used to clean). Cleans and sanitizes restrooms and public spaces using CDC approved cleaning and disinfecting chemicals. May weed whack, rake, mow and water lawns. Sweeps, clears trash and debris, and maintains grounds and buildings. Monitors low pressure boilers and adjusts heating controls in a public building; Ability to recognize mechanical issues in building and report to Supervisor or Foreman Replaces light bulbs, cleans, repairs and maintains lavatories. Maintains order in buildings and areas being used by the general public. Makes minor repairs or may assist in making major repairs.Required Skills & Experience:
Working knowledge of building cleaning practices, supplies and equipment. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Ability to meet and deal courteously with the public. Ability to work relatively independently without constant supervision. Physical strength and agility necessary to perform the essential functions of the work under exposure to varied climatic conditions.Expected Hours/Schedule:
20 hours per week, 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Applications accepted until May 29, 2026 Offers of employment are contingent upon the completion of satisfactory criminal background and credit checks.Salary & Benefits:
