August 2026 Position Summary Drummond Island Elementary School is seeking a dependable, self-motivated, and community-oriented individual to serve as a Custodian/Maintenance Technician. This position is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, attractive, and properly functioning school environment for students, staff, and visitors. The successful candidate will perform custodial duties, routine maintenance tasks, groundskeeping, snow removal, and other operational responsibilities necessary for the effective operation of the school facility. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Custodial Responsibilities Clean and sanitize classrooms, offices, hallways, restrooms, locker rooms, cafeteria, and common areas. Vacuum, sweep, mop, strip, wax, and buff floors as needed. Empty trash and recycling containers daily. Clean windows, doors, and interior glass surfaces. Restock restroom and custodial supplies. Maintain cleanliness and organization of storage areas and custodial closets. Assist with room setup and teardown for school events, meetings, and community activities. Ensure compliance with district cleaning and sanitation standards. Maintenance Responsibilities Perform routine building inspections and identify maintenance needs. Complete minor repairs including plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, and equipment maintenance. Replace light bulbs, ceiling tiles, filters, and other building components. Assist with preventative maintenance programs for building systems and equipment. Monitor heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems and report concerns. Maintain school vehicles and equipment as assigned. Coordinate with contractors and service providers when necessary. Grounds and Outdoor Maintenance Maintain school grounds. Remove litter and debris from school property. Maintain playgrounds and outdoor recreational areas. Assist with seasonal groundskeeping activities. Winter Operations Remove snow from sidewalks, entrances, exits, ramps, and designated walkways. Apply salt, sand, or other ice-melting materials to ensure safe pedestrian access. Monitor weather conditions and respond as needed to maintain safe school operations. Assist with snow removal around emergency exits and building access points. Operate snow removal equipment safely and effectively. Safety and Security Assist in maintaining building security procedures. Conduct routine safety inspections. Report hazards, maintenance concerns, and security issues promptly. Support emergency preparedness and response activities. Maintain compliance with MIOSHA regulations and district safety procedures. Qualifications High School Diploma or GED required. Previous custodial, maintenance, or facilities experience preferred. Ability to operate custodial equipment, lawn care equipment, and snow removal equipment. Basic knowledge of plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and mechanical systems preferred. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Strong organizational and problem-solving skills. Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, parents, and community members. Valid Michigan Driver's License required. Ability to pass required background checks. Physical Requirements Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly. Ability to stand, walk, climb ladders, bend, stoop, kneel, and perform physical labor for extended periods. Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions, including winter weather and snow removal operations. Ability to operate maintenance and custodial equipment safely. Work Schedule Part-time position with a regular work schedule established by the district. Occasional evening, weekend, or emergency call-in work may be required. Snow removal and weather-related duties may require flexible scheduling during winter months. Compensation and Benefits Salary shall be established based on experience and qualifications.
