Church Custodian

  • Part-time Overview FUMC Northville is seeking a reliable and detail-oriented Church Custodian to maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for our congregation and visitors across all church facilities and grounds.
This role supports the church's daily operations, regular worship services, and special events by managing facility cleanliness, coordinating room setups, and assisting with special events. The ideal candidate is self-motivated, cheerful, and deeply respectful of the church's unique community environment and sacred spaces to support an environment where we work to help people find, experience, and share God's love through Jesus Christ.
Position Overview Employment Type:
Part-Time, Non-Exempt Required Hours :
Approximately 30 hours per week (about 6 hours per day, typically between 1:30-8:00 pm), Monday-Friday. Must include some flexibility to cover for seasonal weather issues, specialized events, emergencies, etc. Daily hours can often be flexible based on personal and FUMC needs; opportunity for more hours when covering for other team members
Additional Opportunity :
Coverage is also needed for 4 hours every Sunday morning (8:30 am
  • 12:30 pm).
Candidates who also commit to this shift will be preferred in the hiring process. Duties Facility Cleaning & Sanitation Perform comprehensive cleaning of all church areas to the level required by regulations, including sanctuaries, classrooms, offices, restrooms, hallways, kitchens, and common spaces using appropriate cleaning supplies and equipment. Conduct cleaning tasks such as sweeping, mopping, buffing, dusting, tidying, sanitizing, and polishing to maintain clean surfaces, as applicable. Manage janitorial responsibilities including trash removal, restocking supplies, and disinfecting high-touch surfaces to ensure hygiene standards are met. Carry out custodial maintenance tasks like window washing, light bulb replacement, etc. to support facility upkeep. Support facilities maintenance by reporting repair needs or safety hazards promptly to ensure a secure environment. Maintain cleanliness logs and record completed tasks to ensure accountability and consistent standards. Lock/unlock doors, turn off lights, and set alarms; manage keys. Clear light debris from entryways and walkways, salt doorway areas in winter Report cleaning supply shortages to management. Event Logistics & Setup Arrange and set up tables, chairs, podiums, and light audio/visual equipment for weekly ministries, meetings, and classes, as required. Coordinate room turnarounds and cleanup for large church functions including weddings, funerals, baptisms, holiday services, and community events. Assist Pastors with altar arrangements, flower placement and other worship support, as required. Return spaces to their original configurations and clean up immediately following events, as required. Experience 1-2 years minimum of prior janitorial or custodial experience in commercial or institutional settings. Competence operating commercial cleaning equipment, such as floor buffers, industrial vacuums, and carpet extractors. Knowledge of proper use of cleaning chemicals and safety procedures to ensure a healthy work environment. Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds independently, and walk, stand, bend, kneel, crawl, and climb ladders continuously during the workday. High reliability, trustworthiness, attention to detail, ability to work independently without supervision, and a cheerful, respectful demeanor when interacting with staff, volunteers, church members, and visitors. High school diploma or GED equivalent preferred.
Background Check:
