Custodian (AFSCME) Lake Shore Public Schools - 4.8 Saint Clair Shores, MI Job Details Full-time $17.33 - $22.48 an hour 1 day ago Qualifications Safety regulations Full Job Description Summary We are seeking a dedicated and reliable Custodian to join our team at the New Early Childhood Center. This full-time position is essential for maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for our young learners, staff, and families. The ideal candidate will take pride in their work, demonstrate attention to detail, and be committed to supporting the mission of our early childhood education program
Shift:
3:00 PM to 11:00 PM Per agreement with AFSCME, the application deadline for this position is May 26, 2026 @ 2:00 pm. Responsibilities Perform routine cleaning and maintenance of classrooms, restrooms, hallways, and common areas to ensure a hygienic and safe environment. Sweep, mop, and vacuum floors; dust surfaces; and clean windows to maintain a tidy appearance. Ensure that all cleaning supplies and equipment are used and stored safely and efficiently. Assist in setting up and taking down furniture and equipment for events and activities as needed. Conduct regular inspections of the facility to identify and address maintenance or safety issues promptly. Dispose of waste and recyclables in accordance with established procedures. Maintain inventory of cleaning supplies and notify management when stock is low. Collaborate with teachers and staff to meet the specific cleaning needs of classrooms and other areas. Follow health and safety regulations and protocols to ensure the well-being of children and staff. Participate in training and development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge related to custodial work. Requirements High school diploma or equivalent preferred. Previous custodial or janitorial experience, particularly in an educational or childcare setting, is a plus. Knowledge of cleaning techniques, equipment, and safety procedures. Ability to lift and move heavy objects, as well as perform physical tasks such as bending, kneeling, and standing for extended periods. Strong attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining high cleanliness standards. Good communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of individuals. Basic understanding of sanitation and hygiene principles, especially in relation to young children. Reliable and punctual, with a strong work ethic and a positive attitude. Willingness to undergo background checks and health screenings as required by state regulations.
Additional Duties:
Performs general cleaning, and repair work, particularly during school vacations. Assists parents and other visitors to school buildings with special events and programs. Performs other related tasks as assigned by supervisor .

Wears appropriate safety gear, including masks. Must comply with school district's chemical hygiene program and follow MSDS sheets. The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or nonprescribed controlled substances (including marijuana) in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the District. Travel Requirements Occasional travel between schools, or between schools and central office, may be required. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Ability to follow oral or written work orders from supervisor, and to coordinate work with principal and others. Ability to read, write and speak English fluently. Ability to describe orally or in writing cleaning, maintenance or repair problems as needed. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff and others contacted in the course of work. Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide all units of measure. Ability to work in poor weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, or snow. Ability to work above ground from ladders and automatic lifts. Ability to perform work according to standard procedures and schedule set forth by supervisor(s). Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards This position requires moderate to heavy physical exertion, including:
Lifting/Carrying:
Frequently lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds (e.g., cleaning supplies, trash bags, furniture). Occasional lifting of 70-100 pounds with assistance or mechanical aids (e.g., carts, dollies).
Repetitive Motions:
Perform repetitive tasks such as mopping, sweeping, vacuuming, and scrubbing for extended periods.
Standing/Walking:
Stand and walk for 6-8 hours per shift on hard surfaces, navigating large school facilities and climbing stairs.
Pushing/Pulling:
Move custodial carts, trash bins, or floor buffers, requiring forces of 20-50 pounds.
Flexibility/Dexterity:
Bend, stoop, reach, and work in confined spaces while using cleaning tools or performing minor maintenance tasks (e.g., changing light bulbs).
Endurance:
Sustain physical activity during extended shifts.
Mental Demands:
Maintain focus and attention to detail to ensure thorough cleaning and hazard identification. Manage time effectively to balance multiple tasks (e.g., cleaning classrooms, restocking supplies, responding to urgent requests) under tight schedules. Apply basic problem-solving skills for routine maintenance or equipment troubleshooting. Handle stress from fast-paced environments, frequent interruptions, or high-demand periods (e.g., school events). Communicate effectively with staff, students, and colleagues to follow instructions and coordinate tasks.
Work Hazards:
Custodians may encounter the following workplace hazards:
Chemical Exposure:
Risk of skin or respiratory irritation from cleaning agents (e.g., disinfectants, floor strippers). Personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves and masks provided.
Musculoskeletal Injuries:
Potential for strains or sprains from lifting, repetitive motions, or awkward postures. Training on safe lifting techniques required.
Slips, Trips, and Falls:
Exposure to wet floors, uneven surfaces, or cluttered areas during cleaning tasks. Proper footwear and signage required.
Electrical Hazards:
Risk from operating powered equipment (e.g., floor buffers, vacuums) or performing minor maintenance. Safety protocols must be followed.
Environmental Conditions:
Exposure to dust, odors, or extreme temperatures (e.g., outdoor cleaning). Noise and vibration from equipment may require PPE like ear protection.
Safety Requirements:
Employees will receive training on safe lifting, chemical handling, and hazard recognition. PPE and mechanical aids (e.g., carts, dollies) are provided to minimize risks. Candidates must be able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodations, in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
