Job Description

We are looking for a responsible custodian/maintenance worker to maintain and protect our facilities. The external and internal appearance of a building reflects on the occupants. It is important for this individual to be careful and thorough in working, cleaning and tidying the premises, as well as preventing vandalism. The ideal candidate will be experienced in a custodian/maintenance role focused on building upkeep. They will have great physical endurance to cover a large space. A keen eye for detail and diligence are imperative in custodial maintenance jobs. Duties and Responsibilities
  • Cleans floors of classrooms, offices, special rooms, corridors, stairs, entrances, lobbies, and cafeteria, as assigned.
  • Removes debris on sidewalks leading to building, or as assigned.
  • Sweeps, dry mops, wet mops, vacuums, shampoos, strips, seals, and waxes floors, as assigned.
  • Cleans and disinfects daily the drinking fountains, bathrooms floors, bowls, seats, and urinals in restrooms, as assigned.
  • Fills paper and soap dispensers in assigned areas, as needed.
  • Oils and services all motors and mechanical equipment in areas assigned in accordance with preventative maintenance procedures.
  • Regulates heat, ventilation and air conditioning systems to provide temperatures appropriate to the seasons in accordance with preventative maintenance procedures.
  • Performs preventative maintenance in accordance with established district procedures.
  • Opens classroom doors and entrance doors prior to the start of the school day or closes doors and windows and secures lights prior to leaving post daily in accordance with established schedule
  • Moves furniture and equipment within the building as directed by the principal or Facilities Manager
  • Stores supplies and delivers supplies to teachers as directed.
  • Performs light maintenance and painting tasks, as needed and directed.
  • Cleans glass of lobby and entrance doors as required
  • Sets up, breaks down, and cleans the cafeteria/all purpose room as scheduled
  • Removes snow and ice (shovel/plow) and applies sand and salt, as appropriate, to walks, driveways, parking areas and steps
  • Remains on the school premises during work hours and unless otherwise authorized.
  • Follows established procedures to ensure staff and student safety in the building (i.e., locks specified doors to limit building access once school is in session).
  • Maintain the U.S. Flag according to appropriate regulations and displays the U.S. flag during school hours on days when school is in session
  • Obeys all fire and environmental laws and regulations relating to the plant operations
  • Removes and transports trash and other materials from school grounds to dumpsters in accordance with established schedule.
  • Immediately report any damage to school property and any needed repairs to the Facilities Manager.
  • Drives company vehicle(s) between school locations/job sites, as needed.
  • Performs such other duties as may be assigned by the Facilities Manager or School Business Administrator/School Board Secretary or designee. Requirements and Qualifications
  • Ability to lift and manipulate heavy furniture and climb stairs.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push or pull up to 75 lbs.
  • Prolonged periods standing and walking.
  • Extensive physical activity. Requires strenuous physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required.
  • Must be physically able to climb ladders, bend, or crawl into awkward spaces.
  • Ability to understand and follow specific instructions and procedures.
  • Must be a team player.
  • Attention to detail and conscientiousness.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Salary/Schedule:
Salary is a range between $32,000-$37,000 annually. Salary is determined upon experience and qualifications. This is a full-time, 12-month contract position.
Education/Experience:
High school diploma or GED certificate required. Valid State of New Jersey driver's license. 1 Year experience in custodial work, preferred.
