Head Custodian Work Hours :
Monday - Friday The normal hours for this job are approximately 40 hours per week. Exact daily hours will be determined by the needs of the department during the course of the year, in conjunction with the Director of Finance and Operations. Occasional night or weekend work (including on-call emergency response) is part of the position. Description The Head Custodian is responsible for the overall maintenance and upkeep of our school building, interacting with the Junior Custodian, and interfacing with vendors as needed for larger scale repairs. The ideal candidate must be able to work in a school environment and maintain a positive and friendly attitude with children. The Head Custodian reports directly to the Director of Finance and Operations. Responsibilities Perform minor repairs and building modifications including, but not limited to: Repairing, moving and assembling furniture and lockers Repairing custodial equipment. Painting Hanging teaching aids. Overseeing and participating in construction and facility modification projects (as requested). Organize repair and/or maintenance requests; submit requests and work with technician or contractor to ensure satisfactory completion. General maintenance such as spot painting, changing light bulbs, wall repair (holes), doorknobs, and ceiling tiles. Develop and ensure completion of daily, summer, seasonal, and project cleaning. Coordinate and assist with setup, breakdown and cleanup of school and community use activities. Act as the focal point of contact for visitors, community, local law enforcement, and fire department officials, vendors, contractors, staff, teachers, parents, building use participants related to custodial/mechanical services, and duties at the school. Perform and document building operation safety checks, including daily inspection of building systems, outside grounds, and parking lot. Conduct weekly inspections for building cleanliness. Use ladders when required in work assignments.
Lock and unlock assigned buildings:
secure building when facilities are not in use checking for unlocked doors and windows, report any unauthorized occupants, turn off lights. Ensure safe access to building daily, including snow and ice removal (remove snow from sidewalks, driveways, and parking areas using snow shovels and spreading snow-melting chemicals. Maintain curb appeal of property, activating appropriate interior lighting, locking and unlocking specified entryways and doors, checking for inoperable doors and windows, and monitoring unauthorized entries. Maintain records of supplies and inventory, order supplies via Operations Manager. M.S.D.S - collects and distributes to Operations Manager for maintenance and archiving. Additional janitorial responsibilities as needed Clean the building, including classrooms, hallways, bathrooms, gym. Mop and vacuum all floors. Clean kitchen area, set up, pick up, and thoroughly sanitize cafeteria tables. Clean windows and doors, including windowsills as needed. Empty trash from classrooms. Clean offices as required.
NOTE:
Additional job-related marginal duties assigned as required. Qualifications High School Diploma or GED required. Minimum of three (3) years' experience in janitorial and building maintenance work required. Knowledge of proper methods and handling of techniques, materials, tools, and equipment used in modern custodial and light facility maintenance work. Knowledge of proper use and storage of custodial materials, especially chemicals used for cleaning and building maintenance. Comfortable using light equipment, hand tools and power tools including snow blower, leaf blower, vacuum cleaner, drills, floor scrubber, power washer, ladders etc. Demonstrated ability to take direction and communicate effectively (verbal and written communication). Must carry and respond promptly to a walkie-talkie while on duty and be an initial responder to all safety and security issues, hazards, adverse weather, bodily fluid spills, alarms, fires, water breaks, mechanical and electrical failures, chemical spills, and gas leaks. Ability to work independently and unsupervised if/when necessary. Reliable, dependable, and punctual. Experience in minor electrical, plumbing, and painting required. Knowledge of maintenance and custodial practices, procedures and equipment. Knowledge and ability to apply proper cleaning methods for floors, carpets, furniture, walls, and fixtures. Knowledge and ability to apply safety precautions for chemicals and cleaning supplies. Constantly observing facility for areas in need of repair or cleaning, repairing or cleaning whenever possible, or reporting to appropriate supervisory staff for immediate action and scheduling. Must be able to pass drug and criminal background test. Must have a valid NY State Driver's License and reliable transportation. Must maintain a neat and clean appearance that is appropriate for the workplace setting and for the work being performed. Required Physical Abilities 50lbs lifting requirement. Walking and standing for long periods of time. Able to kneel, bend, or stoop. Able to push objects. Able to climb and descend from ladder Environmental Condition Requirements Work outside in various weather conditions with snow, dust, noise, oil, dirt and grease. Uneven surfaces. Slippery surfaces.
