Description:
The Head Custodian is responsible for overseeing the cleanliness, safety, maintenance, and daily operations of the assigned school building and grounds. This position supervises custodial operations, ensures the facility is maintained in a safe and efficient manner, coordinates building upkeep, and assists with preventative maintenance and repair needs. The Head Custodian serves as the lead custodial employee within the building and works collaboratively with administration, staff, students, and maintenance personnel to maintain a clean and welcoming educational environment.

Essential Functions:
Perform routine building repairs and maintenance
Promote and follow safety procedures
Maintain daily work schedules and records
Assist with plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, and mechanical repairs
Maintain furnaces, air conditioners, and other building systems
Assist with remodeling, renovation, and maintenance projects
Maintain inventory and proper storage of custodial supplies and equipment
Secure the building and support energy conservation efforts
Maintain clean, safe, and orderly work and storage areas
Work cooperatively with administration, staff, students, and parents
Receive, store, and unload building supplies and equipment
Remove snow and ice from entrances, sidewalks, and walkways as needed
Ensure floors and surfaces are clean and free of safety hazards
Assist with inspections and cooperate with fire, boiler, and safety officials
Complete annual custodial supply inventories
Assist with summer cleaning, groundskeeping, and building preparation
Oversee daily cleaning and sanitation of classrooms, offices, hallways, restrooms, locker rooms, cafeterias, gymnasiums, and common areas
Assist with floor care including mopping, buffing, waxing, and refinishing
Conduct routine inspections of the building and grounds
Maintain safe playground and outdoor conditions
Perform other duties assigned by the Superintendent, Principal, or designee
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
- Clean up when students are ill
- Assist administration with tasks as requested
About You:
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred
- One to two years related experience
- Holds building boiler operator license requirements and other certification mandates to satisfy government, board, administrative and contract regulations
- Must be able to demonstrate a basic knowledge of electrical, plumbing, painting
- Must be able to demonstrate the ability to use most common hand tools
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and/or Board of Education may find appropriate

The Garfield Heights City School prides itself on providing a rigorous and comprehensive pre-k through 12th-grade educational curriculum that clearly focuses on student success through college and career readiness. To that end, Garfield Heights High School offers a variety of Advanced Placement courses, including AP English, AP Government, AP American History, Honors Chemistry, Honors Calculus, Honors Physical Science, and more. While the District offers these high-level academic courses, the GHCS also proudly sends more than 225 students on an annual basis to the Cuyahoga Valley Career Center for those individuals deeply interested in learning a skilled profession or hands-on expertise in one of the trades. A wide variety of co-curricular offerings are available to students of all ages in the Garfield Heights City Schools as well. Such opportunities include more than 18 varsity sports, the district's show choir, Music Express, Marching Band, Theater, A 'Capella Choir, National Honor Society, Student Council, Glass Ceiling, Future Engineers, and more. These co-curricular offerings are award-winning on the state, regional and local levels.
