Job Description

If this sounds like you, we invite you to consider this opportunity. As MRC Building Custodian, you will help ensure the cleanliness, care, and daily upkeep of the Metro Regional Center (MRC). This includes lobbies, kitchens, offices, meeting and break rooms, restrooms, and the surrounding campus grounds. You will contribute to a welcoming experience for staff and visitors by providing friendly assistance, answering questions, offering directions, and responding to custodial requests. As the Building Custodian you will: Help create a welcoming, professional environment by keeping meeting spaces, offices, restrooms, and common areas clean, comfortable, and ready for daily use. Support smooth operations by preparing meeting rooms based on Outlook schedules, ensuring spaces are refreshed, organized, and guest ready. Take pride in maintaining high standards of cleanliness through daily sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, disinfecting, and restocking essential supplies. Keep kitchens and break areas inviting by caring for dishware, appliances, and stocked items so employees have everything they need throughout the day. Play an important role in sustainability by managing compost, recycling, and waste systems and ensuring containers are clean and properly staged for pickup. Help maintain safe, attractive exterior spaces—from walkways and parking areas to building entrances—ensuring they're clean, accessible, and well-kept in all seasons. Provide friendly, responsive support by assisting employees and guests with custodial needs, quick requests, and event setups as they arise. Use cleaning equipment safely and effectively, follow organizational procedures, and collaborate with the team on special projects that keep the entire facility looking its best. Performs other duties as assigned.
Attributes for success:
A solid understanding of basic custodial practices and a commitment to maintaining clean, welcoming spaces. Ability to safely and confidently use custodial tools, equipment, and cleaning supplies. Strong customer service mindset with the ability to support staff and visitors in a friendly, professional manner. Excellent attention to detail and pride in delivering high-quality work. Comfort using Microsoft Outlook for email and calendar coordination. Clear, respectful, and tactful communication skills—both in person and over email or radio. Ability to adapt and stay effective in environments where priorities may shift or ambiguity exists. Strong teamwork skills and the ability to work independently when needed. Ability to build positive working relationships and maintain confidentiality. Capacity to meet the physical requirements of the role and operate custodial equipment safely (with or without reasonable accommodation). Exhibit regular, predictable attendance of assigned work schedule.

TO QUALIFY
We will consider any combination of relevant work experience, volunteering, education, and transferable skills as qualifying unless an item or section is labeled required. Minimum qualifications One year of custodial/janitorial experience, and Experience operating a variety of specialized cleaning equipment, such as floor scrubbing machines, carpet shampooing equipment and high-speed floor polishing equipment or other similar equipment, or Any combination of education and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job duties and responsibilities.
Required:
Be able to successfully complete a background check at time of hire. Special Requirements (to be completed within 90 days of hire): Blood Borne Pathogen Training Emergency and Safety Procedures Training Shift and schedule: Tuesday

  • 7:30pm and Friday 10:30am
  • 7:00pm; 32 hours per week.
Working Conditions:
Duties may be performed under various conditions, which may include exposure to contaminated areas, at heights, indoor and outdoor locations under inclement weather, and other adverse conditions. Physically demanding position with frequent standing and lifting of 30 pounds on a regular basis; occasionally up to 50 pounds. Like to have qualifications You do not need to have the following preferred qualifications/transferable skills to qualify. However, keep in mind we may consider them when identifying the most qualified candidates. Your transferable skills are any skills you have gained through education, work experience, including the military, or life experience that are relevant for this position. Experience working in a team environment. Experience operating a variety of specialized cleaning equipment, such as floor scrubbing machines, sweeping machines, carpet cleaning equipment and high-speed floor polishing equipment or other similar equipment.

COMPENSATION AND REPRESENTATION
The full-salary range for this position is step 1: $23.28 to step 7: $31.20 per hour. However, unless a candidate's qualifications justify, based on the Oregon Pay Equity Act requirements and Metro's internal equity review process, the appointment will likely be made between step 1: $23.28 to the equity range step 4: $26.95 per hour. This position is eligible for overtime and is represented by AFSCME union. It is classified as a Building Custodian
