Job Description

Job Summary:
The Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and functional school environment by performing daily cleaning, sanitization, light maintenance, and groundskeeping duties. This position supports building operations by opening and securing facilities, preparing spaces for meals, meetings, and events, and responding to alarms or emergencies as needed. The Custodian maintains equipment and supplies, follows all safety and sanitation procedures, and interacts professionally with students, staff, and visitors.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Clean, sanitize, and maintain assigned areas of the building, including classrooms, offices, restrooms, cafeterias, gyms, hallways, and common areas, following established standards and supervisor direction. Open and secure buildings as assigned, including safety checks, temperature monitoring, flag raising, and inspection for vandalism or hazards. Prepare cafeterias and common spaces for daily operations, lunches, meetings, and special events; assist with setup and teardown of tables, chairs, and equipment. Perform routine custodial and light maintenance tasks such as changing light bulbs and filters, tightening fixtures, minor plumbing shut-offs, and reporting larger repair needs. Maintain custodial equipment, tools, and supplies; ensure proper storage, inventory control, and ordering of materials as needed. Conduct groundskeeping duties as assigned, including mowing, trimming, trash removal, and snow and ice removal. Coordinate and support special events and outside group facility use, ensuring spaces are properly prepared and users are directed appropriately. Assist with summer and deep-cleaning projects, including furniture removal, floor care (stripping, waxing, buffing), carpet cleaning, and detailed room cleaning. Monitor high-traffic areas throughout the day, replenish supplies, respond promptly to spills or accidents, and empty trash and recycling. Respond to alarms and emergencies as required, including participation in on-call rotations. Communicate effectively with supervisors, administrators, and custodial staff regarding building conditions, schedules, and priorities. Provide guidance to custodial staff and assist with work coordination and performance feedback when assigned or in the supervisor's absence. Follow all safety, sanitation, and chemical-handling procedures and interact professionally with students, staff, and visitors. Perform other related duties as assigned by supervisor(s) or building principal.
Qualifications:
High school diploma required Some experience in custodial work preferred Must possess valid PA driver's license Knowledge and understanding of various cleaning chemicals preferred Submission of pre-employment medical examination (Section 148 of the PA School Code) Submission of the following clearances: PA State Criminal History Record PA Child Abuse History Clearance Federal (FBI) Background Check Such alternative qualifications as the Board may deem appropriate and acceptable Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.
