Position SummaryThe Scituate School Department seeks a reliable, hardworking, and safety-conscious Custodian to support the cleanliness, maintenance, security, and overall appearance of district facilities. The successful candidate will help provide a safe, healthy, and welcoming learning environment for students, staff, families, and community members by performing custodial, maintenance, and facility support duties.

Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesBuilding Cleaning and SanitationClean, disinfect, and maintain classrooms, offices, hallways, cafeterias, gymnasiums, locker rooms, restrooms, and other assigned areas.

Sweep, mop, vacuum, dust, and wash floors, walls, windows, furniture, and fixtures.

Replenish restroom and custodial supplies as needed.

Collect and dispose of trash, recycling, and waste materials.

Follow established cleaning schedules and sanitation protocols.

Floor and Facility MaintenanceOperate and maintain custodial equipment, including floor scrubbers, buffers, burnishers, carpet extractors, and vacuum systems.

Strip, wax, buff, and refinish floors as directed.

Perform routine maintenance tasks and report building maintenance needs to supervisors.

Assist with preventative maintenance activities and minor repairs.

Grounds and Seasonal ResponsibilitiesAssist with snow removal activities, including shoveling, salting, sanding, and clearing walkways, entrances, and exits.

Support grounds maintenance activities as assigned.

Assist with emergency weather response and building readiness activities.

Building Security and OperationsOpen, secure, and lock buildings as assigned.

Ensure windows, doors, and building access points are properly secured.

Monitor facilities and report safety concerns, vandalism, or maintenance issues.

Respond appropriately to emergency situations and facility needs.

Event and Operational SupportSet up and break down furniture, equipment, and rooms for school and community events.

Assist with deliveries, inventory, and movement of materials and equipment.

Support district operations during special events and activities.

Professional ResponsibilitiesFollow all district policies, procedures, safety regulations, and applicable state and federal requirements.

Maintain positive working relationships with students, staff, families, and community members.

Attend required trainings and meetings.

Perform other duties as assigned by the Building Principal, Facilities Director, or Superintendent/designee.

Technology and CommunicationUtilize district technology systems to support daily operations, communication, maintenance, and facility management.

Enter, update, and monitor maintenance requests using the district work order management system.

Utilize facility scheduling software to support building use, event preparation, and coordination of facility resources.

Access and respond to district email and electronic communications in a timely manner.

Maintain accurate electronic records related to maintenance activities, inspections, inventory, and facility operations.

Demonstrate the ability and willingness to learn and effectively use new technologies, software applications, and operational systems as adopted by the district.
