Job Description
Summary/Objective The Custodian is responsible for cleaning the building interiors of Smith County to provide a safe, clean and sanitary environment for staff and the public Duties and Responsibilities Clean, dust, wipe furniture; sweep, mop or vacuum floors; empty/clean wastebaskets and trash containers; empty and clean cigarette receptacles. Uses and maintains auto scrubbers, extractors, high speed power washers, buffers, vacuums, brooms, mops and squeegees while cleaning and providing general maintenance of floors, walls, carpets, furniture, etc. Wash accessible interior/exterior windows and clean blinds. Cleans stairways and elevators using a variety of heavy equipment. Cleans upper walls using high-reach poles. Cleans and disinfects restrooms. Request supplies in a timely manner to maintain supply rooms and replace paper goods and other disposable supplies. Remove garbage from assigned areas and place it in a dumpster. Performs other duties as assigned. Required Skills and Abilities Safely and properly, operate a buffer while stripping and waxing floors. Must be able to effectively use/wear required safety equipment such as eye protection, masks, respirators, gloves, etc. Follow written and verbal instructions. Comply with detailed label precautions. Attention to detail. Ability to multi-task. Ability to work independently with little supervision. Respectful of personal property and working spaces. Ability to work cooperatively with co-workers and interact well with county employees and the public. Ability to properly use and maintain heavy cleaning equipment and appliances. Knowledge of cleaning chemicals and supplies as well as safe use of chemicals. Contributes to creating a positive work environment. Maintain responsible and effectual performance and attendance.
Other Duties:
Assist with set-up and clean up for various events. Lock and unlock assigned buildings as needed. May be required to occasionally arm and dis-arm alarm systems. Attend safety meetings and other related meetings. Notify supervisor or management of occurring deficiencies or needs for repairs. Handle emergency cleaning and upkeep requests. Provides extra deep cleaning when requested by supervisor. Education and Experience Education and Experience High School diploma or G.E.D. preferred. Previous custodial experience is preferred. Physical Demands and Work Environment The Custodian must be able to climb stairs, push, pull, reach and lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Very good physical condition and strength are required. The employee is frequently required to stand and walk. Hand strength and dexterity are required to handle and feel objects, grasp tools, operate controls and climb ladders. Must be able to verbally communicate with others and hear to receive instructions. Have essential and metal capabilities in the following: Interpersonal skills, memory, attention to detail, follow directions, comprehension, calculating, reading, writing, speaking, evaluating, simple mathematics, organizing and innovation. Occasionally required to sit. Must be able to frequently squat, stoop or kneel. Ability to bend or twist at the neck. Ability to regularly clean up blood, saliva and other bodily fluids that are unpleasant to deal with. Must be able to perform work in dusty environments. Must be able to perform work while wearing a protective mask.
