Job Description

Under basic supervision, the custodian performs a variety of custodial tasks throughout City facilities to ensure a clean and safe environment for City staff and citizens. Maintains offices, file rooms, meeting rooms, break rooms and restrooms in a clean, sanitary and aesthetic condition at all times and to customers' satisfaction. Gather and disposes of trash and waste daily. As scheduled and in accordance with customer needs, vacuums and shampoos carpets; cleans walls, windows, woodworks and baseboards; and picks up trash from building grounds. Dust mops and wet mops floors as scheduled and in accordance with customer needs. Works closely with other members in the Building Services Department to ensure timely notifications of facilities that need repair. Maintains confidentiality as to all information seen or overheard during performance of duties, especially with respect to the Police and Legal Departments. As requested, moves furniture and heavy objects and arranges furniture for meetings. As required, picks up departmental supplies from vendors and restocks cleaning materials. Performs duties in a safe and orderly manner, complying with all City and department safety rules. Regular attendance at work and arrives on time. Performs all other job-related duties as assigned or as become apparent. Subject to varied hours and after-hours callbacks. Ability to get along with other employees and the public. Ability to sit, stand and transport self from building to building. Ability to drive a vehicle to and from various worksites. Employee will bend, kneel, twist, climb, squat and stoop while performing duties. Employee will regularly lift up to 25 pounds and occasionally push or pull up to 100 pounds while moving furniture and setting up meeting rooms. Employee will be exposed to dirt, dust, noises, odors, fumes and water while performing duties. Employee is also exposed to chemical, mechanical and electrical hazards. Work hours may vary and employee may be subject to occasional after-hours callbacks.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:
Ability to read and understand policies, work orders and equipment manuals. Skill in the operation of buffers, waxes and other types of cleaning equipment. Knowledge of the proper use and storage of cleaning chemicals and ability to interpret Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) in case of emergency. Ability to pass additional background screenings by Police Department.
Minimum Education, Experience and Certification:
High school diploma or equivalent plus one to three years of experience. Valid Texas driver's license with driving record that meets City guidelines.
