Job Description
Randolph-Macon College is seeking a dedicated and experienced Assistant Director of Custodial Services to help lead campus-wide custodial operations. Reporting to the Director of Operations and Physical Plant, this role is essential in ensuring a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. The Assistant Director of Custodial Services oversees daily cleaning operations across all campus facilities. This position supervises two team leaders and approximately 30 custodial staff, while coordinating vendors for specialized services. The ideal candidate is a strong leader who values operational excellence, teamwork, and high standards of service.
ResponsibilitiesOversee daily custodial operations across campus facilitiesSupervise and support team leaders and custodial staff (30+ employees)Assist in managing the custodial budget, procurement, and cost controlCoordinate external vendors for deep cleaning, floor care, and special projectsManage staff scheduling, timekeeping, and event coverageEnsure facilities are prepared and maintained for campus eventsConduct routine inspections to ensure cleanliness, safety, and quality standardsDevelop and improve standard operating procedures (SOPs)Lead staff training programs and ensure compliance with safety regulationsProvide responsive, professional customer service to campus stakeholdersFoster a positive team environment focused on accountability and moraleQualificationsAssociates or Bachelors degree in Facilities Management, Business, or related field required (or equivalent combination of education and experience)5-7 years of progressive custodial or facilities management experienceMinimum 3 years of supervisory experience managing teams of 15+ employeesStrong leadership and team management skillsExperience managing budgets and procurement processesAbility to oversee large teams and manage multiple prioritiesExcellent communication, organization, and problem-solving skillsKnowledge of custodial equipment, cleaning techniques, and safety standardsExperience in large, multi-building environments (college, hospital, or corporate campus) preferredExperience managing vendors and service contractsWorking ConditionsWork is performed across multiple campus buildings with frequent movement between locationsRegular exposure to varying weather conditionsFrequent stair climbing and occasional lifting up to 50 poundsExposure to cleaning materials and productsStandard schedule: 6:00 a.m. 2:30 p.m.
This position is designated as essential personnel and requires working during periods of inclement weather and/or other emergency situations.
