POSITION SUMMARY:
The Head Custodian is responsible for the routine maintenance and overall appearance of the school building. Performs routine and non-routine cleaning in an assigned area or areas to provide the proper building sanitation by following prescribed cleaning schedules. Participates in project work periodically and responds to other miscellaneous requests submitted by faculty and staff. Works under limited supervision performing routine cleaning and minor maintenance tasks by using prescribed chemicals, hand tools, and machines in order to keep the school building and grounds in a safe, clean, and orderly condition. Provides leadership to other building custodians in conjunctions with building administration.
QUALIFICATIONS
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school. Knowledge of safety hazards and proper use of various cleaning and sanitizing solutions. Ability to keep the school clean and orderly. Ability to interact with staff, students, parents, and visitors at school while remaining professional, polite, and courteous. Ability to schedule work load in order to meet deadlines on a weekly basis - detail-oriented and thorough. Effectively demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions. Experience working directly with individuals and families from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Familiarity with equity and inclusion frameworks. Models non-discriminatory practices in all activities. Respects the worth, dignity and individual differences of others. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to present to diverse audiences to foster professional relationships and express and/or exchange ideas. Excellent interpersonal skills. Proficiency in the use of a variety of office/instructional equipment and technology with experience using Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and email. Demonstrated leadership qualities and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students, teachers, administrators, and the community.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Routine functions include trash removal and disposal, sweeping, dust mopping, dusting, wet mopping, vacuuming and spot cleaning of carpet, restroom sanitation, cleaning glass, mirrors and fixtures, restocking soap dispensers and paper supplies, sanitizing drinking fountains, replacing light bulbs/fluorescent tubes, cleaning/replacing air conditioner filters, cleaning walls, vents, chalkboards, and baseboards. Adheres to the proper cleaning methods, storage, proper care, and disposal of equipment and supplies. Responds to a variety of requests from the administration, faculty, and staff which includes but is not limited to: setting up for meetings and class functions, moving furniture, unloading and storing deliveries. Responds promptly to accidents or potential safety hazards such as spills, restroom problems, and student illnesses. Reports all accidents and/or potential hazards to the building administration(s) immediately, or as soon as reasonably possible. Performs routine maintenance tasks to maintain the building site, including, minor and routine painting, plumbing, and other related maintenance activities. Refinishes or restores resilient floor tile as required by mechanical stripping, sealing, finishing, buffing, scrubbing, and recoating. Maintains carpet by machine extraction, shampooing, and spotting. Opens and/or secures the building, including weekends, to provide protection against vandalism and theft, as requested by supervisor(s). Maintains building perimeter by sweeping walks, mowing grass, cultivating flower beds, trimming shrubbery, playground facilities/grounds, and shoveling/removing snow/ice. Regularly checks freezers, coolers, and other equipment to insure functional operation and contacts maintenance staff for repairs. Regularly checks the furnace, air conditioner(s), boiler, and other equipment to ensure functional operation and contacts maintenance staff for repairs. Observes and promotes safe work practices and procedures at all times. Uses and wears safety and/or protective equipment, as appropriate. Maintains proper boundaries with students at all times, assuring respect for the ethical and legal duties in the staff-student relationship and the essential duty to serve as a role model. Assumes responsibility for and participates in staff development (professional growth) and training to keep materials, supplies, and skills up-to-date. Follows appropriate safety procedures and properly maintains equipment. Takes all industry standard precautions to protect students, staff, equipment, materials, and facilities. Actively participates in and attends all required meetings. Maintains confidentiality when appropriate. Complies with and supports school division policies, regulations, procedures, and the HCPS Strategic Plan. Effectively performs other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORK ENVIRONMENT
Light work, lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds frequently. Prolong periods of standing with regular travel throughout the school and effectively interacts with staff and students. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; and subject to inside and outside environmental conditions. Regular contact with staff members and students is required.
