Job Description

GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK
Performs responsible clerical and technical work controlling, processing and ensuring the security of evidence and recovered or found property at the Sheriff's department; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS
Receiving, processing, storing and disposing of evidence; controlling evidence; preparing and maintaining files and records. (These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.) Receiving, processing and storing evidence; controlling evidence; preparing and maintaining files and records; receiving and storing lost and abandoned property; assisting citizens. Maintains evidence in a secure manner. Transports evidence to laboratories for analysis. Maintains computerized and manual records systems on evidence and property. Purges evidence and recovered property in accordance with applicable laws, obtains court orders for destruction or auctioning of unclaimed or illegal property. Provides citizen services such as lost and found, stolen and recovered property. Testifies in court with regard to security and custody of evidence. Prepares and maintains a variety of records, notifies various parties regarding evidence and property. Performs related tasks as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
General knowledge of the laws and practices governing the storage and control of evidence; general knowledge of standard office procedures and practices; general knowledge of the rules and regulations of the department; ability to follow detailed oral and written instructions; ability to prepare and maintain detailed records and prepare reports; ability to establish effective working relationships with others; ability to deal courteously with the public; ability to communicate effectively in oral form.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and some clerical experience involving public contact work.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires stooping, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside environmental conditions.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Candidates must pass a background investigation to include a polygraph exam.
