Part-Time Position Summary The Kitchen Assistant supports the Kitchen Manager and kitchen team in the daily operations of the community kitchen. Responsibilities include assisting with food preparation, cooking, sanitation, food storage, and meal service. This role helps ensure meals are prepared safely, efficiently, and in compliance with food safety regulations while serving clients, staff, and community partners with professionalism and care. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Assist with the preparation and cooking of meals according to established menus and portion guidelines. Prepare ingredients by washing, peeling, chopping, and portioning as directed. Support the preparation of large quantities of food for community meal programs and special events. Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of kitchen equipment, utensils, work areas, and storage areas. Follow proper food storage, labeling, and food safety procedures in accordance with health department regulations. Monitor food temperatures and ensure food safety standards are maintained. Assist with receiving, inspecting, and properly storing food deliveries. Support basic inventory management by notifying the Kitchen Manager when supplies are low. Serve meals in a courteous and respectful manner to clients and guests. Work collaboratively with the Kitchen Manager, kitchen assistants, volunteers, and other staff. Follow all organizational policies and local health department regulations. Perform other related duties as assigned. Qualifications Food Handler Certification (or willingness to obtain upon hire). Previous food service or kitchen experience preferred but not required. Basic knowledge of food preparation and kitchen safety practices preferred. Ability to follow instructions and work effectively as part of a team. Ability to work in a fast-paced kitchen environment. Sensitivity and respect when serving vulnerable and diverse populations. Physical Requirements Ability to stand for extended periods of time. Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Ability to bend, stoop, and reach frequently. Ability to work in a warm kitchen environment. Work Environment This position operates in a commercial kitchen environment that provides meals for community members, including individuals and families experiencing hardship.
