Job Description

Open until filled: Lifeguard -
Pool Supervisor:
$22.50 - $29.36 All applicants must be a minimum of 18 years of age by the date of application. Successful candidates will be required to complete all pre-employment requirements prior to the mandatory training scheduled for the last weekend of June. Failure to complete these requirements will result in disqualification form the employment process, in which the conditional offer will then be rescinded. We anticipate swim classes to start in early July
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION
Under general supervision of assigned supervisory or management staff, provides pool supervision of various levels of classes; over sees lifeguards and water safety instructor swim instruction staff; and trains and certifies new staff in areas of pool lifeguarding and water safety instruction.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices. Trains and certifies/re-certifies staff in pool lifeguarding as needed. Evaluates swimming abilities of all students to avoid unsafe conditions. Explains and enforces pool rules to provide a safe and accident-free aquatics environment. Administers CPR and first aid as necessary. Maintains records and reports. Performs daily pool maintenance including set-up and take down of pool equipment. Performs related work as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
The following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job and/or be learned within a short period of time in order to successfully perform the assigned duties.
Knowledge of:
Basic operations, services, and activities of a swimming facility.
Six basic swim strokes:
crawl, breast, back, elementary back, butterfly, and side. Swimming instruction techniques. Water safety practices. Lifeguarding principles and lifesaving skills. Class organization. The formulation and implementation of lesson plans. Principles and practices of general pool maintenance functions. Principles and practices of public relations.
Ability to:
Conduct group swim lessons. Demonstrate the six basic swim strokes. Enforce applicable rules and regulations of the City pool. Remain calm in emergency situations. Maintain a high fitness level. Demonstrate patience and understanding when working with citizens of all ages and skill levels. Exercise independent judgment in emergency situations. Prepare written reports and records. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Education and Experience:
Education/Training:
Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.
Experience:
Some experience as a swimming instructor is desirable.
Licenses and Certificates:
Possession of CPR certification. Possession of First Aid certification. Possession of American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor or Swim Lesson University Instructor Certificate is desirable. Possession of Title22 - First Aid for Public Safety Personnel is desirable.
Other Requirements:
Must be at least 18 years of age at the date of appointment. Must possess good swimming skills. Must possess some paid or volunteer experience in working with children or young adults.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKINGENVIRONMENT

Environment :
Work is performed outside in an aquatics facility. Surfaces are hard and slippery. Tasks are regularly performed with exposure to swimming pool chemicals, as well as, adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, wetness, humidity, rain, temperature and noise extremes, disease ,or pathogenic substances.
Physical :
Tasks involve the regular and, at times, sitting, walking, standing ,and swimming for prolonged periods of time; bending, stooping, kneeling or crouching; reaches with hands and arms; lifts, pushes, and pulls 50 pounds when responding to emergency lifesaving situations; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate pool equipment; mental capability to observe people and situations and respond calmly in emergency situations.
Vision :
See in the normal visual range with or without correction.
Hearing :
Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
