Part-time Lifeguards

POSITION SUMMARY

The Lifeguard supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. At the YMCA of Auburn-Lewiston, the Lifeguard creates a safe, welcoming, and positive atmosphere that respects all individuals while promoting and maintaining safe swimming conditions in the pool, on the pool deck, and in surrounding aquatic areas in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Maintain active surveillance of surrounding aquatic areas. Know, understand, and consistently apply all safety rules, policies, and guidelines related to the aquatic environment. Respond to challenges and incidents quickly, calmly, and appropriately. Remain calm, professional, and objective under pressure or during emergency situations. Perform equipment checks and ensure required rescue and safety equipment is available and in proper working order. Conduct chemical testing and take appropriate action when not actively guarding, as required. Attend all staff meetings and in-service trainings or notify supervisor in advance of conflicts. Adhere to policies regarding appropriate boundaries with youth. Complete required abuse risk management training. Follow procedures related to supervising youth and managing high-risk activities. Report suspicious or inappropriate behaviors, policy violations, safety concerns, and incidents immediately. Comply with all mandated abuse reporting requirements. Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum age of 15. Current certifications in Lifeguarding, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, and AED, or ability to obtain certifications within 30 days of employment. Ability to demonstrate lifeguarding skills in accordance with YMCA standards. Ability to maintain certification-level physical and mental readiness. Demonstrated leadership, maturity, professionalism, and sound decision-making skills. Ability to complete required YMCA online trainings within 30 days of hire and prior to beginning work independently.

Maintain alertness and situational awareness at all times, with no lapses in consciousness. Ability to hear and respond to noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment. Ability to clearly observe all areas of the pool, deck, and assigned zone of responsibility. Ability to stand, walk, swim, stoop, kneel, and lift as required during the course of duties. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds independently and occasionally lift more than 50 pounds with assistance. Ability to work in a warm, humid, and chlorinated aquatic environment for extended periods of time.
