Under the direction of the Community Education Coordinator, the Swim Lesson Instructor is responsible for teaching people of all ages swim lesson curriculum provided by Albany Area Community Education.

None Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Teach all assigned swim lessons in accordance with district guidelines; develop and implement assigned lesson plans based on class ratios, skill levels, and developmental needs. Ensure the safety, supervision, and positive learning environment of all participants at all times, including recognizing distress signals and responding appropriately in accordance with established safety procedures and training. Arrive prepared and on time; maintain accurate attendance records; complete progress reports, evaluations, incident reports, and time records accurately and within required timelines. Assist in emergency situations, support lifeguards as needed, and report facility or safety concerns promptly to appropriate supervisory staff. Communicate professionally with parents, students, and staff; address concerns appropriately and refer complex matters through the established chain of command. Attend and participate in required meetings, orientations, trainings, in-services, and debriefings; maintain and renew required certifications. Follow all Community Education policies, district guidelines, safety standards, grooming expectations, and organizational procedures while maintaining a professional demeanor.
Minimum Qualifications:

Job:
Knowledge of swim lesson curriculum, including skill progressions and competencies at each instructional level. Knowledge of proper stroke mechanics and swimming techniques for demonstration and evaluation. Knowledge of water safety principles, risk prevention practices, and emergency response procedures in an aquatic environment. Knowledge of CPR and First Aid principles applicable to instructional settings. Understanding of child development principles and age-appropriate instructional strategies for preschool and school-age participants. Understanding of adult learning principles applicable to adult swim instruction. Familiarity with district policies, facility safety guidelines, Community Education standards, and documentation procedures including attendance, progress reporting, and incident reporting. Work:
Ability to effectively instruct, demonstrate, and evaluate swimming skills while maintaining appropriate class control and a positive learning environment. Ability to recognize distress signals, maintain situational awareness, and respond appropriately to emergency situations in a noisy aquatic environment. Strong interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with children, adults, parents, and staff, including providing constructive feedback and addressing concerns professionally. Ability to demonstrate sound judgment, patience, persistence, and self-control in instructional and high-pressure situations. Organizational and time management skills necessary to manage lesson preparation, attendance tracking, documentation, and reporting responsibilities. Ability to work collaboratively within a team, follow established policies and chain of command, and maintain professional working relationships. Physical ability to work in the water for extended periods and move throughout the pool facility while maintaining professional performance standards.
Work Environment:
Duties are performed primarily in an indoor aquatic facility within a school setting. The employee is regularly exposed to heat, humidity, noise, and pool chemicals. The position involves continuous monitoring of patrons and frequent interaction with students and community members. This position requires the employee to be in the water for extended periods of time.
Physical Job Requirements:
Employee is continuously required to stand, walk, talk, and hear; frequently required to reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and occasionally required to sit or climb. Employee must be able to swim proficiently, perform water rescues, and exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including assisting or rescuing individuals. Employee must be able to successfully complete and maintain the American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification requirements.
