Job Description

Overview Join our vibrant aquatics team as a Lifeguard and/or Swim Instructor, where your energy and dedication will ensure a safe, enjoyable, and engaging environment for all pool visitors. In this dynamic role, you will be the frontline protector of swimmer safety while inspiring confidence and love for swimming among participants of all ages. Duties Monitor pool areas continuously to ensure the safety of all swimmers and guests, responding swiftly to emergencies with professionalism and confidence. Maintains effective, positive relationships with all members, participants and other staff. Enforce pool rules and safety guidelines to prevent accidents and promote responsible behavior in the water, according with YMCA policies and procedures. Conduct swim lessons for individuals and groups, tailoring instruction to different skill levels to build confidence and improve technique for children or adults of all ages and backgrounds. Perform routine pool maintenance tasks such as cleaning filters, skimming debris, checking chemical levels, and maintaining water clarity to ensure optimal swimming conditions. Assist with pool upkeep including minor repairs, equipment checks, and ensuring the cleanliness of surrounding areas for guest comfort. Provide excellent guest services by answering questions, offering swimming advice, and creating a welcoming environment for all visitors. Maintain accurate records of safety drills, incident reports, lesson progress, and pool maintenance activities to ensure compliance with health and safety standards. Design and adapt functional, safe instructional/exercise plans for all participants. Maintain a high knowledge with the ability to introduce new skills, evaluation of existing skills and adaptations for those unable to perform the task. Attends all staff meetings and in-service trainings. Qualifications Minimum age of 15 Bilingual strongly preferred. Proven lifeguard experience with current certification in professional rescuing, CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation), AED (Automated External Defibrillator), and First Aid from a recognized organization. Strong swimming skills with the ability to perform rescue procedures confidently under pressure. Must be able to pass background checks and clearances in accordance with all Greater Wyoming Valley Area YMCA policies for child abuse prevention. Experience in teaching or assisting with swim lessons is highly desirable. Ability to perform physical tasks including heavy lifting (cleaning and other equipment) and standing or walking for extended periods. Frequent bending, stretching, squatting, and skills equivalent to performing rescues. Hearing noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment. (including in the water and anywhere) Must be able to see and observe all sections of an assigned zone to maximize the safety of yourself and all other patrons. Knowledge of pool maintenance practices including chemical testing, cleaning techniques, and basic equipment troubleshooting. Excellent guest service skills with a friendly, approachable attitude that fosters trust and comfort among visitors. $11.50 - $20.00 per hour
