Full Job Description Summary:
The Instructor (School Bus) - State Certified plays a critical role in ensuring the safety and competence of school bus drivers by delivering comprehensive training programs that meet state certification standards. This position is responsible for educating new and experienced drivers on safe driving techniques, state regulations, emergency procedures, and student management to promote a secure transportation environment for children. The instructor will develop and implement curriculum, conduct practical driving assessments, and provide constructive feedback to help drivers improve their skills and maintain compliance with all applicable laws. Collaboration with transportation departments and adherence to evolving safety protocols are essential to this role. Ultimately, the instructor contributes to the overall safety and efficiency of student transportation services across the state by preparing drivers to perform their duties with professionalism and care.
Minimum Qualifications:
Valid state certification as a School Bus Instructor or equivalent credential as required by the state. Possession of a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with the appropriate endorsements for school bus operation. Demonstrated experience as a school bus driver with a clean driving record and knowledge of state and federal transportation regulations. Strong understanding of student safety protocols and emergency response procedures. Ability to pass background checks and meet all state-mandated requirements for working with minors.
Preferred Qualifications:
Previous experience in driver education or training roles, particularly within school transportation. Additional certifications related to driver safety, first aid, or emergency management. Experience using technology and multimedia tools to enhance instructional delivery. Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively engage with diverse learners and stakeholders. Familiarity with state-specific transportation management software or record-keeping systems.
Responsibilities:
Deliver state-certified training programs to school bus driver candidates and current drivers, covering both classroom instruction and behind-the-wheel training. Develop, update, and maintain training materials and lesson plans in accordance with state regulations and best practices. Conduct evaluations and practical driving tests to assess driver competency and readiness for certification or recertification. Provide individualized coaching and feedback to drivers to address areas of improvement and reinforce safe driving behaviors. Maintain accurate records of training sessions, driver progress, certifications, and compliance documentation. Stay current with changes in state transportation laws, safety standards, and instructional techniques to ensure training content remains relevant. Collaborate with school transportation administrators and safety officials to coordinate training schedules and address operational needs.
