Job Description

1. Assist the students when getting on and off the bus giving extra assistance to those students who are physically impaired. 2. Assist driver in the loading and unloading of physically disabled students and operating the wheelchair lifts. 3. Maintain visual contact of students as they enter or leave the bus, making sure that this is done safely and that all danger zones are clear before the bus leaves the bus stop. 4. Monitor the students to be sure they are seated and demonstrating safe behavior at all times. 5. Assist the bus driver in watching student activity at bus stops. 6. Remind the students of the rules while riding the bus. 7. Follow the transportation procedures in the effective disciplining of students. 8. Learn the names of all students riding the school bus. 9. Be familiar with the bus route assisting the driver with the many bus stops. 10. Assist in observing the area behind the bus when the driver must back-up. 11. Monitor students who have to cross a street to enter the bus or cross a street after leaving the bus by leaving the bus and making sure the traffic has stopped before allowing the student to cross the street. 12. Conduct a walk-through inside of the school bus after every trip to ensure there are no students on the vehicle. 13. Attend all required safety and inservice programs. 14. Be familiar with the location and use of all emergency equipment on the bus. 15. Assist in conducting passenger evacuation drills. 16. Exhibit professional, courteous behavior in all interactions with students, parents, school staff, co-workers, supervisors and the general public. 17. Perform other duties as assigned by the Transportation Coordinator.
B. KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- The Transportation Bus Monitor will: 1. Be knowledgeable of federal, state and local laws, and rules and regulations pertaining to student bus conduct and safety. 2. Be familiar with hazardous materials related to the job and how to properly handle them as well as understand the proper precautions when dealing with substances which may carry diseases that are communicable including clean-up and disposal of contaminated materials. 3. Be able to make on the spot decisions within 30 - 60 seconds during life threatening situations to protect the passengers, bus and general public. 4. Be aware of and understand student behavior sufficiently to maintain control of the student passengers.
C. PHYSICAL SKILLS AND EFFORTS
- The Transportation Bus Monitor must: 1. Be able to repeatedly climb in and out of a bus. 2. Possess vision and depth perception to be able to observe students and traffic and safely guide students across streets. 3. Be able to stoop, reach and grasp in order to restrain students if necessary. 4. Be able to speak and hear within the normal range to be able to move quickly in a confined space in the event of the evacuation of student(s) off the bus. 5. Possess ability to maneuver quickly and safely through emergency bus exits.
