Bus Aide SubstituteThis position is posted to create a pool of candidates. Eligible Candidates will be contacted as positions become available.
JOB SUMMARY
Assists special education students during their transportation to and from school. Work involves responsibility for physically aiding special needs students when boarding and exiting school buses, and for overseeing the behavior of students to provide the bus driver freedom to operate the bus safely. The nature of the work may require assisting students in wheelchairs by pushing/pulling of varying weights up to and including persons in excess of 200 lbs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assists special needs students when boarding and exiting school buses, occasionally lifting them when necessary and/or operating mechanical lift apparatus.
  • Assigns students to seats and adjusts safety straps. Safely stores crutches and other orthopedic aids.
  • Observes students during their transportation and reacts promptly to behavioral and/or physical needs. Assists students during medical emergencies. Administers limited/specifics medications per Individualized Education Plan (IEP) requirements.
  • May assist with or prepare reports of behavioral problems encountered with the students during their transportation to and from school.
  • Attends in-service training, workshops, and individualized training for specific students as required by the Transportation Division.
  • Works cooperatively with school bus drivers, parents, students and other staff members. Maintains a clean bus and safety equipment.
  • Sees that students requiring a bus change at a shuttle point are properly and safely transferred to the correct school bus, as required.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned within the same classification or lower.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education
  • High School Diploma or Equivalency Certificate preferred.
Experience
  • Less than one (1) year experience in dealing with special needs students preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics
  • Ability to exercise considerable patience and to assist students with physical, cognitive, and behavioral disabilities during their transportation to and from school.
  • Ability to assists students in wheelchairs by pushing/pulling of varying weights up to and including persons in excess of 200 lbs.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with students and parents.
  • Ability to exercise constant alertness to students' physical/emotional difficulties and mental limitations, and be prepared to react promptly in the event of medical issues or other problems.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in dealing with special needs students.
  • Ability to pass the annual Maryland State School Bus Attendant Physical Examination required.
  • Evidence of no criminal record or convictions of crimes of moral turpitude.
Licenses and CertificationsEmployee must retain active licenses, certifications, and enrollment as a condition of employment.
  • Based on assignment, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification issued by American Heart Association, Inc (AHA) or American Red Cross authorized training centers preferred.
  • Based on assignment, First Aid Certification issued by American Heart Association, Inc (AHA) or American Red Cross authorized training centers preferred.
  • Upon hire, Bus Attendant Physical Exam (Annual) issued by Concentra Occupational Health required.
