- This recruitment is for a three-quarter-time benefitted position (0.75 FTE), meaning the employee will work 30 hours per week.

11:59 p.m. on Sunday, May 17, 2026 The City of Novato is seeking a Gymnastics Instructor with demonstrated experience coaching girls' competitive teams within the USA Gymnastics (USAG) Development Program and/or Xcel Program. While the Gymnastics Instructor classification is intentionally broad and assignments may include a range of age groups and skill levels, this recruitment is focused on candidates with a strong background in competitive coaching, safe skill development, and preparing athletes for competition. Our program is committed to fostering a fun and positive environment that emphasizes strong character development, ensuring every athlete has the opportunity to grow, succeed, and build confidence. Ideal candidates will have experience supporting athlete progression, coaching at meets, and creating a positive learning environment for competitive gymnasts. This position requires availability during peak gymnastics programming hours, including weekday afternoons and evenings, weekends, and travel for competitive meets. Work schedules are determined based on operational needs and program demand. To supervise, assign, review and participate in the work of staff responsible for providing gymnastics services and programs within the Recreation Division of the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department; and to perfom1 a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives direction from a Recreation Supervisor. Exercises direct supervision over recreation staff.ESSENTIAL AND MARGINAL FUNCTION STATEMENTS
-- Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:Essential Functions:
Plan, prioritize, assign, supervise, review and participate in the work of part-time/seasonal staff responsible for providing gymnastics activities within the Recreation Division; maintain personnel records as required. Participate in the selection of part-time/seasonal gymnastics staff for assigned area; provide or coordinate staff training; work with employees to correct deficiencies; implement discipline procedures. Recommend and assist in the implementation of goals and objectives; establish schedules and methods for providing gymnastics programs; implement and enforce policies and procedures. Organize, schedule, and implement gymnastics activities within assigned area. Schedule usage of gymnastics facility for special gymnastics events in assigned area. Maintain and file recreation records and reports in alignment with City's records retention policy. Monitor and inspect gymnastics facility and equipment; secure gymnastics facility. Develop, plan, and lead gymnastics classes in areas of assignment; plan and implement special events and activities including trips, camps, meetings, and performances. Respond to inquiries and concerns regarding gymnastics activities; research and resolve conflicts as required.Marginal Functions :
Promote and coordinate specific activities within assigned area of gymnastics; prepare program events and facility marketing material including news releases, flyers, schedules of events, pamphlets and brochures. Maintain awareness of new developments in the field of gymnastics; incorporate new developments as appropriate in to programs. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.Knowledge of :
Basic operations, services and activities of gymnastics program. Principles of supervision, training and performance evaluation. Principles, techniques, and practices of modern gymnastics program development and implementation. Modern office equipment including computers. Recent developments, current literature and information related to gymnastics. Ability to : Supervise, organize, train and evaluate the work of part-time/seasonal gymnastics staff. Coordinate and direct assigned gymnastics programs suited to the community. Recommend and implement goals and objectives for gymnastics program. Interpret and explain City policies and procedures. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work including the general public. Maintain mental capacity with allows for effective interaction and communication with others. Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include the following: Walking, standing or sitting for extended periods of time. Operating assigned equipment and vehicles. Demonstration of basic gymnastics skills. Spotting Basic-Advanced gymnastics skills. Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for: Making observations Communicating with others Reading and writing Operating assigned equipment and vehicles Experience and Training Guidelines Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:Experience:
Two to five years of experience teaching gymnastics including some lead supervisory experience. License or Certificate Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid C.P.R. and First Aid Certificate, USAG Safety Certification, USAG Membership.WORKING CONDITIONS
Scheduling Conditions:
Expectation to work afternoons, evenings and weekends. Working during peak programming hours, typically weekday afternoons/evenings and weekends, is a consistent and integral part of this role.Environmental Conditions :
Gymnastics Center; work closely with children and members of the public.Physical Conditions :
Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for walking, standing, sitting for long periods of time, or demonstration of basic gymnastics skills, spotting basic-advanced gymnastics skills, moving and/or lifting of gymnastics equipment.SELECTION PROCESS

As a result of the selection process an eligibility list of qualified candidates will be established to fill current and future vacancies as long as the eligibility list remains active. Candidates who score the highest in the selection process will be required to pass a reference and background exam prior to receiving a conditional job offer.
