SUMMARY:
The Camp Counselor supports the delivery of a safe, fun, and educational summer camp experience for youth in the Lake Tahoe Basin. Counselors supervise campers and help guide them through a weekly 5‑day, 4‑night overnight camping program. This position focuses on creating an inclusive environment, teaching foundational outdoor skills, and supporting campers' social‑emotional growth. Counselors lead daily activities, teach Leave No Trace principles, basic outdoor skills, first aid awareness, cooking, camp setup, leadership, and team‑building. They help connect youth to the outdoors, encourage healthy decision‑making, and create opportunities for campers to build confidence, problem‑solving abilities, and real‑life skills. The Camp Counselor serves as a positive role model and ensures that all programming is delivered safely and supportively. Minimal Qualifications Wilderness First Aid or First Aid/CPR certification (training may be covered by employer) Lifeguard Certification preferred, but not required Comfort camping outdoors for multiple nights and using basic camping equipment At least two years of experience working with children, youth, and families from diverse backgrounds Supportive of a culturally diverse environment and staff Knowledge of trauma‑informed and culturally competent service delivery methods preferred Demonstrated ability to plan, implement, and evaluate program activities Ability to take initiative, work independently, and meet program goals Strong oral, written, and organizational skills Willingness to participate in staff training, meetings, projects, and evaluations Successful completion of Nevada and FBI background checks and Child Abuse Prevention Training Valid driver's license and clean driving record, or reliable transportation to and from camp Enthusiasm for outdoor education and working in nature Ability to serve as a positive role model for campers & work collaboratively as part of a team in a camp environment Willingness to review and sign all camp policies and procedures Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus 18 yrs+ Camp Counselor•Duties and Responsibilities Programming Create an inclusive, supportive environment that promotes campers' social, emotional, and physical development. Lead and participate in daily camp activities, outdoor lessons, games, and group discussions. Encourage camper participation while recognizing and accommodating physical or emotional limitations; provide alternative activities when needed. Facilitate problem‑solving, teamwork, and decision‑making activities that build confidence and leadership skills. Teach foundational outdoor skills, including Leave No Trace principles, basic campcraft, cooking, navigation awareness, and first aid awareness. Modify activities to support campers with additional needs and ensure full participation whenever possible. Maintain situational awareness of camper location, behavior, and safety at all times. Maintain appropriate camper‑to‑staff ratios during all activities. Help youth develop outdoor skills that support leadership development, self‑esteem, and healthy decision‑making. Work with the camp team to monitor weather and environmental conditions; follow all emergency and evacuation procedures. Maintain and organize camp equipment and supplies; report equipment needs to the Camp Manager. Review weekly schedules and activity plans to ensure preparedness for each day's programming. Safety and Risk Management Maintain safety and health protocols to ensure a safe camp environment and safe participation in all activities. Monitor campers for signs of physical distress or illness (e.g., dehydration, sunburn, insect bites, fatigue) and report concerns immediately to the Camp Manager. Respond to minor injuries or issues using first aid training and established procedures. Support safe food handling, campsite cleanliness, and proper use of camp equipment. Exercise sound judgment, maintain boundaries, and remain calm in challenging situations Maintain awareness of environmental hazards and adjust activities as needed to ensure camper safety. Record Keeping and Compliance Keep accurate records and reports of incidents, injuries, illnesses, conflicts, or unusual activities; submit documentation to the Camp Manager. Maintain confidentiality of camper and staff health and personal information. Understand and follow child abuse reporting guidelines; ensure that no corporal punishment or misuse of authority occurs at camp.
