Job Objective :

Responsible for the direct supervision and interaction with campers in a mutually positive and respectful manner. Work directly with Head Counselor to maintain supervisory ratios and needed camper involvement. Responsible to :

Head Counselor Minimum Qualifications:

Training and experience in working with school age children Ability to carry out projects while working with children of all ages and abilities Ability to work with a staff of diverse backgrounds and age groups Ability to manage camper behavior through the use of sound methods designed to develop behavior that demonstrates respect for self and others Ability to communicate effectively with Head Counselors and other Counselors Follow all established policies and procedures including time and attendance policy Enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, and self-control Must be at least 18 years of age

Specific Responsibilities:

Work with Head Counselor to insure adequate supervision Supervise general conduct and activities of children Actively engage campers in activities and draw them into the group Mediate camper disputes and provide a resource for those campers needing intervention in dealing with each other Assist with morning check in procedures, set up supplies for morning activities, give facility a once over prior to opening for any needed supplies Accompany all off site trips and maintain direct supervision of a group of campers during the trip Clean eating areas after breakfast, lunch and snack. Encourage campers to be responsible for their on area and assist them with any package which may be difficult to open Provide group supervision during fire drills, lost camper drills and buddy checks Assure that each camper has properly "checked in" at each activity by handing in his or her name card. Assure that when a camper leaves an activity they take their name card with them and that the Program Director or Head Counselor who is coordinating the charts is also aware of the child's location. Maintain a verbal, visual or physical contact of the child till they are released to the next Counselor. Responsible for general "clean as you go" at all activities, closing clean up of areas and set up for next morning Assist Specialty Staff (Arts and Crafts Coordinator, Science and Nature Coordinator, Recreation Coordinator) in the performance of their activities These are not the only duties to be performed. Some duties may be reassigned and other duties assigned as needed.
