The City of Newport is looking for a temporary Aquatics Facility Supervisor to help keep our aquatic center running smoothly and welcoming for everyone. You'll help with daily operations, programs, and general facility support, so it's a nice mix of planning and hands-on work. The position is temporary and the duration is unknown. We're flexible on scheduling and can offer part-time or full-time hours. It isn't initially eligible for benefits, but if your hours consistently meet the required threshold, that may change. What You'll Do As a Temporary Aquatics Supervisor, you'll help support our aquatics operations: Recruit, hire, train, and supervise lifeguards, instructors, and support staff Maintain appropriate staffing levels and oversee scheduling and payroll processes Conduct staff trainings, certifications (including CPR/lifeguarding), and performance evaluations Foster a positive, accountable team culture and coordinate with HR on personnel matters Ensure the facility is clean, safe, and fully operational at all times Oversee water quality testing, chemical balancing, and filtration system maintenance Coordinate repairs and preventative maintenance, including annual shutdown planning Step in as needed to perform lifeguarding, swim instruction, and emergency response Assess community needs and develop engaging aquatics programs and events Build partnerships and promote programs through marketing materials and outreach Respond to customer inquiries, concerns, and feedback with professionalism and care Help develop and enforce policies, procedures, and safety standards Ensure compliance with state regulations and inspection requirements What You Bring Strong leadership and team management experience Knowledge of aquatic facility operations, safety standards, and water chemistry Excellent communication and customer service skills Current (or ability to obtain) lifeguard, CPR, and First Aid certifications Why Join Us? MINIMUM/MANDATORY EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the duties as described. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be an Associate's Degree, AND 7 year's related experience, with 4 years in a management or supervisory capacity.KNOWLEDGE
: Knowledge of principles, terminology, techniques, methods, supplies, equipment, basic rules, and skills involved in a variety of aquatics programs. Practices and techniques of CPR, automated external defibrillator (AED), First Aid, and oxygen administration. Knowledge of techniques in supervising various aquatic and other recreational activities. Knowledge of the philosophy and objectives of the recreation profession, and the purpose, use, and benefit of various elements of specific programs. Management techniques, basic accounting, and business knowledge. Knowledge of state health and safety regulations related to the staffing and operations of an aquatics facility.SKILLS :
Skill in the use of personal computers, various related software programs, standard office equipment, swimming pool equipment, and parks and recreation equipment. Strong time management, analytical, organization, and prioritization skills. Customer service orientation and skills. Effective management and team-building skills, conflict resolution, and strong leadership. Exceptional interpersonal skills and strong oral and written communications skills with a variety of audiences. Competence in business English, spelling, and punctuation. Strong reasoning, analysis, decision making, and problem- solving skills, combined with excellent judgment and professionalism.ABILITIES
: Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with city management, employees, Council members, other entities, and the public. Ability to effectively supervise staff, and establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and city officials. Ability to instruct and supervise aquatics and other recreation programs efficiently. Ability to work independently and within a group structure. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with individuals and groups. Ability to communicate complex material in a simple, understandable manner. Ability to elicit information and cooperation from individuals and groups. Ability to effectively function in a work environment with numerous interruptions and conflicting demands, and use sound judgment in following and applying appropriate laws, regulations, policies, and procedures. Bachelor's Degree in Recreation Swim Lessons Program Instructor Physical Demands The employee is frequently required to sit, stand, bend, kneel, stoop, communicate, reach, and manipulate objects. The position requires mobility, including the ability to frequently lift or move materials up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift or move materials up to 60 pounds. The position requires the ability to operate a motorized vehicle. Manual dexterity and coordination are required approximately 60% of the time to operate such equipment such as computers, keyboards, telephones, standard office equipment, and recreational equipment. The position requires the mobility to interact with and use parks and recreation equipment. The employee risks harm from physical hazards, including chemicals, fumes, wet and slippery surfaces, and swimming pools.WORKING CONDITIONS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work location is primarily indoors where most of work occurs in a recreational/swimming pool setting.
