Job Description

Description Camp Goals:
It is the counselor-to-camper relationship, the example set, the interest shown, the constant concern for the campers' welfare and happiness both spiritually, physically, morally, and mentally that make a camp what it should be for our campers. Responsibilities include supervision, leadership, and guidance to a group of 8-10 children of similar age within a cabin. Lives with campers. Instructs in one or more activity areas daily.
Key Responsibilities General Responsibility:
Identify and meet camper needs and carry out camp programs
Specific Responsibilities:
Prepare for and actively participate in staff training, meetings, and supervisory conferences Carry out established roles for supervising camper health and enforcing camp safety regulations Follow camp rules and regulations pertaining to smoking, use of alcoholic beverages, and/or drugs Manage personal time off in accordance with camp policy Maintain good public relations with campers' parents Supervise all assigned aspects of the campers' day including line-up, cabin clean-up, mealtimes, rest hour, evening activities, getting ready for bed, and after-hours duty assigned Set a good example for campers and others including cleanliness, punctuality, sharing clean-up and capers, sportsmanship, and table manners Develop cabin/village/activity lesson plans with participants as appropriate Assist in teaching or leading an activity, as assigned Recognize and respond to opportunities for problem solving in the group Develop opportunities for interaction between campers and staff Provide opportunities for the group so that each individual experiences success during camp Provide opportunities for discussion of individual or group problems or concerns Help each participant meet the goals established by the camp for camper development These are not the only duties to be performed. Some duties may be reassigned, and other duties may be assigned as required
Essential Functions:
Ability to communicate and work with groups participation (age and skill levels), and provide necessary instruction to campers Abilities to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity Cognitive and communication abilities to plan and conduct the activity to achieve camper development objectives
Skills, Knowledge & Expertise Minimum Qualifications:
High School graduate or equivalent, or at least eighteen years of age Desire and ability to work with children outdoors Ability to relate to one's peer group Ability to accept supervision and guidance Teaching proficiency in one or more camp skill areas: tennis, archery, swim instruction, waterskiing, sailing athletics, photography, rifle, canoeing, hiking, windsurfing, horseback, etc. Good moral character, integrity, emotional maturity, and adaptability Enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, and self-control About YMCA of Greater Boston The YMCA of Greater Boston is the largest social services provider in Massachusetts.
