Job Description
The typical hiring range for this position is $27.14 to $29.85 per hour, depending on experience.
GENERAL PURPOSE
Performs a variety of general administrative and first-line supervisory duties as needed to plan, organize and supervise the operational functions of the fitness center, including dry-land fitness, water fitness, personal training, drop-in childcare, and other miscellaneous programs.SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the general supervision of the Aquatic Center Manager.SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Provides general supervision to Daycare Supervisor, Fitness Floor Supervisor, instructors, and various part-time, seasonal, volunteer, and contract personnel. Plans, implements, and directs, dry-land fitness, water fitness, childcare programs, and other miscellaneous programs and identifies staffing, equipment, space, funding, scheduling and other pertinent factors; meets program goals and objectives; designs, administers and instructs dry-land fitness programs; provide individual consultation for the development of personal training programs for fitness members. Evaluates programs and makes appropriate adjustments to maximize program effectiveness; conducts consumer satisfaction surveys; gathers verbal and written feedback from participants, staff, and associated individuals. Develops and coordinates fitness center orientation including introduction to fitness center, instruction on cardiovascular and strength training equipment, and safety issues for all new members of the fitness center. Manages the development and maintenance of procedure and training manuals on all program operations, equipment, facility, and maintenance protocols. Develops and promotes programs to encourage participation; develops and disseminates promotional literature; coordinates and implements special events, activities and staff training certifications. Develops program cost projections and makes budget recommendations; monitors program expenditures to assure compliance with established financial guidelines; reviews pertinent statistical and cost/revenue data, aids in preparation of bids and equipment purchasing; registers program participants for aquatic and recreation programs; takes registration information and fees, issues receipts. Provides immediate supervision personnel; participates in the hiring process; monitors and evaluates employee performance; prepares work schedules; reviews time sheets and verifies hours worked; assists in the development of worker skills by performing on-the-job training; conducts regular meetings; coordinates participation in off-site training as needed to assure technical competency of instructors; maintains fitness instructor certifications; makes recommendations affecting job retention, advancement and discipline; submits child care background checks and tuberculosis tests to state licensing agency. Acts as Senior Advisor for senior health insurance fitness programs; verifies member eligibility and maintains files; implements and directs monthly promotions; plans, coordinates and implements quarterly social activities; submits weekly and monthly reports to insurance companies Ensures equipment is in good condition and accessible for participants; identifies equipment maintenance needs; schedules physical inspection procedures and documents maintenance and/or repair needs; makes minor repairs as required; maintains an accurate inventory of equipment and supplies. Monitors facility operations to assure compliance with state and federal operations and safety guidelines; monitors security of facility and equipment and ensures safety of program patrons and staff.Education and Experience:
A. Bachelor's degree in Recreation, Health and Physical Education, Exercise Science, or related field, AND B. Three (3) years of progressively responsible experience performing above or related duties, including one year experience in a supervisory role, OR C. An equivalent combination of education and experience.Special Qualifications:
Must have one of the following certifications: American Council on Exercise (ACE) Aerobic Fitness Association of America (AFAA) American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) Must be Red Cross certified in First Aid or able to obtain within one month of hire. Must be able to obtain Silver Sneakers Certification within 6 months of hire. Must be certified in CPR/Automated External Defibrillator (AED) or able to obtain within one month of hire.Essential Functions, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Considerable knowledge of methods and techniques of developing and operating fitness programs; exercise and training principles and procedures; philosophy and objectives of fitness programming; use of variable resistance equipment, aerobic equipment and other exercise-related equipment; community and public relations; sources of health-related information; fitness testing, evaluation and risk factor screening procedures; behaviors that promote or compromise health; healthy nutrition and exercise principles; individual and group learning methods; methods and techniques of child care operations and licensing requirements; interpersonal and organizational skills; Ability to organize fitness programs, develop and maintain timely program schedules and schedule special events; make group presentations; develop and maintain a budget; establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, employees, co-workers and the public; communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.Work Environment:
Incumbent of the position performs in a climate-controlled environment. Tasks require variety of physical activities, generally involving muscular strain, such as walking, standing, stooping, sitting, and reaching.
