Job Description

The Assistant Director of Day Camp supports the planning, coordination, and daily operations of a dynamic summer camp program. Working closely with the Camp Director, this role helps lead staff, oversee programming, and ensure a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment for all campers. The Assistant Director plays a key leadership role in supervising counselors, mentoring staff, and helping deliver a wide range of recreational and enrichment activities.

$20.40 - $23.40 Hourly Remote Tier 1: Zero (0) days remote/month Provide coverage as Camp Director in the absence of the Camp Director Provide a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for all participants Support the supervision, engagement, and well-being of campers on-site Maintain a safe environment and report any deficiencies, incidents, or accidents to a supervisor Administer First Aid and respond appropriately in emergency situations Supervise, communicate with, and mentor camp staff and Counselors-in-Training (CITs) Provide coverage in the event of staff shortages Support the planning and implementation of engaging, developmentally appropriate camp activities Assist with daily camp operations, including scheduling, set-up, and clean-up Work will begin at least 15 minutes before camp begins and after camp ends each day Provide excellent customer service to parents, guardians, and caregivers through ongoing communication and program updates Communicate with families regarding schedules, updates, or concerns as needed Assist with camper rosters, attendance tracking, and participant information Follow all departmental policies and state licensing rules and regulations Assist with inventory, organization, maintenance, and replacement of camp supplies Foster a positive, cohesive, and team-oriented work environment Reinforce adherence to departmental policies, procedures, and core values Assist in staff evaluations Attend and participate in staff meetings and trainings as required Ability to actively support City diversity, equity, and cultural competency efforts within stated job responsibilities and work effectively across diverse cultures and constituencies. Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion as evidenced by ongoing trainings and professional development. Be at least 18 years of age and have a high school diploma or the equivalent. College coursework in Education, Childhood Development, Family Studies, or Recreation Management is desired. First Aid/CPR certification. Experience supervising staff. Ability to supervise and organize groups of children for activity programs. Ability to deal effectively with discipline problems, co-workers, and supervisors. Knowledge of safety principles and practices as they apply to group activities. Knowledge of a variety of recreation/leisure activities and group games. A cooperative attitude and a team player. Enthusiasm, patience, a desire to work with children, and creativity. Ability to pass a State of Vermont Background Check for Childcare Providers and be fingerprinted as part of the process. Complete required trainings before the start of the camp program, as part of the childcare licensing.
