Job Description
Under general supervision, plans, formulates and implements a variety of community recreational programs. Will provide leadership, direction and instructions to other employees involved in the program. Assign schedules and supervise Recreation Program Leads, Instructors, Assistants, and Volunteers. Assist the Outdoor Program Manager with program development, coordination, and planning. Maintain regular attendance and follow all District policies and procedures. Maintain records and prepare reports. Drive District vehicles when needed. Teach, coach, or lead programs as assigned. Prepare lesson plans for camps and classes. Inspect equipment and facilities for safety hazards and take or recommend corrective action. Order supplies and equipment under supervision of Program Managers. Attend required trainings and staff meetings. Set up and clean up daily for classes and camps. Promote Bainbridge Island Metro Parks & Recreation sailing programs and serve as a community ambassador. Maintain required certifications (First Aid/CPR/AED, SafeSport, US Sailing Level 1+).
For Sailing Coordinator:
hold WA Boater Ed Card and have extensive powerboat and dinghy sailing experience; US Sailing Level 1-3 preferred. Represent the District professionally at all times. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned. Sailing Program-Specific Duties Work closely with the Outdoor Programs Manager on programming, budgeting, staffing, and problem-solving. Coordinate with the District mechanic to ensure proper maintenance, use, storage, and replacement of boats, trailers, and equipment. Manage engine and trailer servicing according to schedules. Oversee off-season storage, rinsing, inspection, securing, and winterization of boats. Obtain repair and maintenance quotes and transport boats to service locations as needed. Submit catalog class descriptions, revisions, and promotional photos. Assist with staff and volunteer recruitment, training coordination, and onboarding. Mentor instructors and teach classes when needed. Respond promptly to emails and send class/camp welcome emails. Refill fuel cans with ethanol-free gas and submit receipts. Ensure classes and equipment do not conflict with partner organizations' scheduled use of shared spaces. Coordinate dinghy, motorboat, trailer, and facility use with Friends of Bainbridge Island High School Sailing. Coordinate boat/equipment loans to Port Madison Yacht Club for youth programs and events. Promote BIHS Sailing Team and PMYC Jr. Sailing per cooperative agreements. Must be willing to tow boats/trailers using district vehicle. Must be age 21 or older with a valid WA State driver's license and good driving record. Education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma. Minimum of one-year experience as a recreation leader or related role. CPR, AED and First Aid certifications. Significant experience in related area of activity. Basic computer skills. Ability to pass a background check. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Proven leadership ability. Flexibility, positive attitude, enthusiasm and strong problem-solving skills. Proficiency and interest in the activity area. Ability to focus on a single task, transition quickly and multitask as needed. Ability to respond quickly to sounds and respond to unsafe situations. Ability to participate fully in the recreation activities for extended periods of time. Work Environment and Physical Effort This is a non-smoking workplace. Depending on the specific program, work is performed both indoors and outdoors using Park District, public or private facilities or in the water or recreational areas. Though most programs operate during the day, a few programs meet in the evenings and/or overnight. Programs and trips may be out of reach of cell phone coverage. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. An Assistant Recreation Program Coordinator must be in good physical condition must be physically able to assist participants and participate in activities. Must be able to perform physical requirements of programs at the most rigorous level. May experience exposure to extended periods of sun, snow, rain, cold temperatures, wind, water and potentially uneven terrain that may contain trip hazards. Must be able to hear distress noises and hear and see distress signals in a variety of environments, keeping safety in mind at all times. Must be able to sit, stand, walk, grab, pull and push objects, squat down, stoop, kneel, crouch and jump. Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Hours will vary depending on the program schedule and may include early morning, weekend and evening shifts.
