ROLE DESCRIPTION
A Summer Camp Counselor provides leadership and guidance for a group of campers, ensuring a quality experience to children and parents that focuses on the Mother Africa mission to support African refugee and immigrant women and their families to reach their highest potential. We are committed to leadership building, advocacy and community action to reduce barriers to healthcare, education, safety and economic independence while fostering a comfortable space to celebrate our cultures, our families, and our growth. A Summer Camp Counselor creates positive, nurturing relationships with children, while building cooperative relationships with parents/caregivers. Under the direction of the Youth Coordinator, the Summer Camp Counselor will be responsible for assisting with the planning, development and implementation of program activities.
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
A Summer Camp Counselor must be proactive, energetic, great with youth, and possess strong communication and organizational skills. Must have the ability to maintain control of an area even when distracted by noise or activity, and work with a diverse group of youth. Must have experience leading youth activities. A Summer Camp Counselor also must possess: Minimum 1 year experience leading activities for youth and can bring these activities and skills to camp to share with the other counselors. Preferably 2-5 years of experience. CPR, First Aid certifications. Ability to implement age-appropriate/developmentally appropriate program activities Self-starter, will engage youth in activities independently throughout the day Detail-oriented, ability to closely follow program agenda and directions Previous experience with diverse populations (multicultural, multilingual, refugee and immigrant communities) Ability to develop positive relationships with people from different backgrounds Must pass background check
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be able to stand for long periods of time Maintain energy throughout the full day of camp Lift items (up to 20 lbs) Carry items (up to 20 lbs)
PRINCIPLE ACTIVITIES
Co-lead a group of 10-12 youth campers with a fellow counselor Youth Campers are ages 6-17, broken out into age groups such as (6-8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-17). Be comfortable and experienced in working with youth in at least 2 of these age groups. Arrive before camp starts to help set up daily and clean up at the end of the day to close out. Supervise activities of children during the camp, ensuring no youth is unattended at any time. Provide opportunities for development and engagement for each camper, meeting them where they are. Ie some campers are more outgoing where some are quieter and need different types of encouragement. Create and maintain group unity by supporting all campers to feel a part of the group. Prepare yourself to engage with many different types of themes and activities. Prepare for those in advance including: arts, environment, health & nutrition, sports, games etc. Attend camp meetings including all pre-program training and team meetings. Actively participate in the general planning of the camp program, bringing innovative and progressive ideas. Promptly report to the Youth Coordinator any difficult or unusual situations. Set a good example in promptness, manners, language, appearance, and health. Set a good example in respect and care for the outdoors. Check attendance each morning for your group. Engage campers as they arrive while their parents check in. Always know the whereabouts of the campers in your group, including morning arrivals, camp, etc. Keep all equipment in good operating condition and be responsible for returning items to their proper place. Complete daily and/or weekly paperwork, such as attendance, meal counts, etc. Maintain positive relations with colleagues and Mother Africa staff members Assist in maintaining and cleaning of assigned areas. Abide by all Mother Africa policies and procedures.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
This position requires a person who is able to work in a bustling environment, with vibrant energy, many distractions and a great deal of laughter and joy. Supervision of youth members is an integral part of our work. Summer Camp Counselors must be able to plan and implement activities in-person using a variety of resources and tools. Safety is of the utmost of importance, thus planning and preparing is paramount. The duties of a Camp Counselor will be for activities outside in varying weather conditions; you may be exposed to sunny, wet, or humid conditions outside of your immediate control.
