This role ensures safe food handling, maintains accurate donor and client records, and manages food logistics. The ideal candidate is an organized, collaborative leader with effective communication skills, experience in food distribution or a closely related setting, and a proven track record in grant writing. Essential Duties / Responsibilities Under the general direction and guidance of the REFP Board, the Pantry Manager will:
Logistics & Inventory:
Develop, implement, and maintain organizational systems for ordering, receiving, sorting, storing, and distributing food and supplies.
Donation Management:
Oversee donations from the Food Bank, grocery partners, and the community to optimize freshness and minimize waste.
Compliance & Safety:
Adhere strictly to food safety regulations, site cleanliness standards, and REFP policies and ethical guidelines.
Reporting & Data:
Ensure compliance with The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) client eligibility guidelines. Maintain client records and prepare timely reports for the USDA, Food Bank, and REFP Board.
Volunteer Leadership:
Recruit, train, and supervise volunteers of all ages and backgrounds to ensure a welcoming, efficient experience for clients while building strong team morale.
Fundraising & Outreach:
Lead efforts in soliciting food donations, researching grant opportunities, and writing grant proposals.
Digital Presence:
Maintain and update the REFP website and social media profiles (Facebook and Instagram) to engage and attract community donors and volunteers.
Community Liaison:
Serve as the primary liaison to Grace Lutheran Church and the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano. Attend monthly REFP board meetings and community events as needed.
Financial Awareness:
Maintain a working knowledge of the REFP operating budget.
Minimum Qualifications Experience:
Demonstrated experience supervising volunteers or staff, managing inventory, and working in a customer-facing or community-oriented role. Equivalent experience in a nonprofit, food service, warehouse, retail, hospitality, or related fast- paced operational environment is highly valued.
Technical Skills:
Proficiency in computer applications for reporting and data management (e.g., Microsoft Office, donor or client databases).
Preferred Qualifications Bilingualism:
Professional fluency in both English and Spanish is highly preferred.
Certifications Food Safety:
Willingness to obtain all necessary food safety and operational certifications within an agreed-upon timeframe post-hire.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Cultural Competency:
Exceptional skills in serving a diverse client and volunteer population with patience, professionalism, compassion, and flexibility.
Conflict Resolution:
Ability to handle operational challenges collaboratively, balancing firmness with empathy.
Industry Knowledge:
General understanding of hunger issues, food safety protocols, proper storage practices, and local community resources.
Physical Demands:
Ability to stand and walk for extended periods, and safely lift and move boxes weighing up to 25 lbs.
Location, Schedule, and Working Conditions Location:
On-site at Grace Lutheran Church in Richmond, California (operating in both indoor and outdoor settings).
Hours:
This is a part-time position budgeted for 24 hours per week.
Schedule:
Required on-site hours are Tuesdays and Fridays from 6:45 AM to 2:45 PM (16 hours total on-site). The remaining 8 hours per week will be allocated to administrative duties, digital updates, grant work, and meetings.

$42.00 per hour
