Assistant General Manager 45502 M 51, Decatur, MI 49045 From $18 an hour - Temporary, Part-time, Full-time From $18 an hour - Temporary, Part-time, Full-time About The Hayloft Since 1978, The Hayloft has been a beloved seasonal restaurant and ice cream parlor in Decatur, Michigan, serving up classic diner food, hand-scooped ice cream, and a warm, family atmosphere. Open May through November, we pride ourselves on friendly service, consistent quality, and being a true neighborhood gathering spot for families, campers, and visitors alike. Position Overview The Assistant Manager plays a key role in The Hayloft's day-to-day success, with a primary focus on front-of-house operations and staff supervision, as well as some back-of-house supervision. This person will be the energetic, hands-on leader on the floor during shifts — ensuring guests have a great experience, staff are supported and accountable, and service runs smoothly even during our busiest rushes. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who thrives in a fast-paced, people-first environment and wants meaningful leadership experience in a well-loved seasonal business. Key ResponsibilitiesFloor & Front-of-House Operations Act as the on-floor leader during shifts, setting the pace and tone for staff and guest interactions Ensure dining and service areas remain clean, organized, and welcoming throughout the day Address guest questions, concerns, or complaints promptly and professionally, escalating to ownership when appropriate Support opening and closing procedures, including cash handling, register reconciliation, and end-of-day reporting Staff Supervision Supervise, schedule, and coach front-of-house staff, including counter, serving, and ice cream staff Lead pre-shift briefings to communicate priorities, specials, and any operational updates Train new hires on service standards, POS systems, and Hayloft culture and expectations Monitor staff performance and provide real-time feedback and coaching on the floor Help enforce attendance, dress code, and conduct standards consistently and fairly Step in to support or fill staffing gaps during call-outs or unexpectedly busy periods Help maintain compliance with food safety, health code, and workplace safety standards Inventory checks and restocking of front-of-house supplies as needed Assist with ordering from our main vendors Qualifications Prior restaurant, food service experience preferred Strong leadership and people skills, with the ability to motivate and direct a team in a fast-paced setting Excellent communication and conflict-resolution skills Comfortable handling cash, POS systems (Square), and basic end-of-day reporting Able to stand for extended periods and work evenings, weekends, and holidays during the season Positive, guest-first attitude and a genuine enjoyment of working with the public Reliable, punctual, and able to commit to the full May-November season Schedule & Compensation This is a seasonal, full-time position running from approximately May through November, with hours that include some evenings, weekends, and holidays based on business needs. Compensation is competitive and commensurate with experience.
