Job Description
General Manager — Hal & Mal's Jackson, Mississippi | Full-Time | Reports to Ownership Hal & Mal's is a Jackson institution - our operation spans a full-service restaurant, The Walk-In (our cocktail bar), and one of the city's most beloved live music and private event venues. For decades, we've been a gathering place where food, music, art, and community come together in the heart of downtown. The General Manager is the operational leader of Hal & Mal's and an extension of ownership in the building. The GM is the standard-bearer — for hospitality, for culture, and financial discipline. This person owns day-to-day operations across the restaurant and The Walk-In, and serves as the primary point of communication and coordination with our events and catering team.
Key responsibilities include:
Lead daily operations of the restaurant, The Walk-In and catered events, ensuring consistent quality, service standards, and guest experience Manage scheduling, shift leadership and task delegation across front and back of house Maintain compliance with all health, safety, sanitation, and ABC/alcohol service regulations Oversee vendor relationships, ordering, inventory controls, and cost of goods across food and beverage programs Uphold and evolve the standards that make The Walk-In a distinctive cocktail experience Support execution of major recurring events and festivals that are central to the Hal & Mal's calendar Recruit, hire, onboard, and develop a team that reflects the spirit of each entity Build and maintain training programs for service, bar, kitchen coordination, and guest recovery — so standards live in the team, not just in the manager Create a culture of accountability paired with genuine care: coach in the moment, document fairly, celebrate wins, and develop future leaders from within Conduct regular team meetings and one-on-ones; keep communication flowing up to ownership and down to every shift Own the
P&L:
manage food, beverage, and labor costs against budget with weekly and monthly review cadence Oversee cash handling, daily reconciliation, deposits, and POS integrity Prepare and present regular financial and operational reporting to ownership, with honest analysis of what's working and what isn't Identify revenue opportunities and cost efficiencies across the restaurant, The Walk-In, and event operations Partner with ownership on budgeting, pricing decisions, and capital priorities
Qualifications:
5+ years of progressive restaurant/hospitality management experience, including P&L ownership; multi-outlet or venue experience (restaurant + bar + events) strongly preferred Candidate must have strong computer skills, the role requires high proficiency in restaurant point of sale software, Google Suite, email management, scheduling software and task management systems Demonstrated success building, training, and retaining hourly and salaried teams Strong fluency in financials, budgeting, cost controls, labor management, and reporting Excellent communicator and coordinator — able to keep multiple teams aligned in a busy, layered operation Working knowledge of Mississippi ABC regulations and responsible alcohol service Calm, decisive floor presence; comfortable leading through high-volume service and large events Genuine love for hospitality, live music, and community — and an appreciation for what Hal & Mal's means to Jackson Compensation & Benefits Competitive salary based on individual experience Potential for performance-based bonus tied to financial and operational goals Health insurance, PTO and company perks available Hal & Mal's is an equal opportunity employer.
