School Director Position Summary The Cafeteria Manager is responsible for the daily front-line operations of the campus cafeteria, which serves approximately 300 students and staff members each day. This position serves as the lead cook and oversees cafeteria operations, including food preparation, short-order cooking, cashiering, inventory management, sanitation, scheduling of daily workflow, and supervision of cafeteria assistants. The Cafeteria Manager is responsible for maintaining a safe, clean, efficient, and customer-service-oriented environment for students, staff, and visitors. This position works closely with school administration and other departments to ensure meal service operations run smoothly and efficiently. While responsible for daily operational oversight, this position is not responsible for overall cafeteria sales, budgeting, or profit management, which are handled by school administration. Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesCafeteria Operations- Oversee daily cafeteria operations and ensure efficient meal service during designated serving times.
- Serve as the primary cook and perform food preparation and short-order cooking duties.
- Direct and supervise cafeteria assistants to ensure proper staffing coverage and workflow efficiency.
- Ensure all food preparation equipment and kitchen areas are operational, organized, and ready for service.
- Coordinate opening and closing procedures for cafeteria operations.
- Ensure quality customer service is consistently provided to students, staff, and visitors. Cash Handling and Register Oversight
- Supervise and assist with operation of the cash register and safe handling of cash transactions.
- Prepare register drawers, balance cash receipts, and complete end-of-day reconciliation procedures.
- Maintain accurate and organized cash handling practices. Menu Planning and Inventory Management
- Develop and maintain monthly cafeteria menus with appropriate daily variety.
- Monitor food usage to minimize waste and maximize product efficiency.
- Order food, beverages, and supplies necessary for cafeteria operations.
- Receive and inspect deliveries to verify accuracy and quality of products received.
- Maintain purchase orders, invoices, and related records in an organized manner.
- Ensure proper storage, labeling, rotation, and inventory control of food and supplies. Sanitation, Safety, and Compliance
- Ensure compliance with all applicable health, sanitation, and food safety regulations.
- Enforce Health Department-approved safety procedures and sanitation standards.
- Coordinate cleaning activities, including dishwashing, mopping, sanitizing surfaces, and maintaining kitchen cleanliness.
- Oversee cleaning and routine maintenance of kitchen equipment and appliances.
- Maintain a safe, secure, and orderly cafeteria and kitchen environment. Staff Leadership and Collaboration
- Assist with training, onboarding, and development of cafeteria staff.
- Coordinate staffing assignments and daily responsibilities.
- Work cooperatively with school administration, department heads, instructors, and staff.
- Identify operational challenges and recommend process improvements when appropriate.
- Support school operations and assist other departments as needed. Position Requirements
- Minimum of two (2) years of supervisory or management experience in a kitchen, cafeteria, or restaurant environment.
- Minimum of two (2) years of food preparation, cooking, or chef experience.
- Current/valis Save Serve Certificate preferred, or ability to obtain certification immediately upon hire.
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational and multitasking abilities.
- Effective leadership and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to operate a traditional cash register and accurately handle cash transactions.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and adapt to changing operational needs. Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand for extended periods of time.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to work in kitchen environments with exposure to heat and commercial kitchen equipment.
- Ability to bend, reach, push, pull, and perform repetitive motions associated with food service operations.
