Job Description

Assistant Shift Supervisors deliver direct care services under the supervision of a Therapist or a Mental Health Professional (MHP) who is responsible for each resident's Active Treatment Plan and are also responsible for ensuring that Mental Health Specialists (MHS) deliver exceptional direct care services in a house or unit in cooperation with a MHP or Therapist. Assistant Shift Supervisors are intended to lead by example when working directly with the clients and work under the authority given to them by the Lead and Shift Supervisors to maintain a therapeutic environment. Assistant Shift Supervisors are responsible for engaging with the clients in the same manner as an MHS, but is able to act either under the guidance and authority of the Shift Supervisor or given specific responsibilities by the Shift Supervisor to assist in the maintenance of the shift schedule, routine activities, and other logistics as assigned.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Ensure the provision of compassionate, culturally sensitive services. Ensure all house or unit residents are present and on time for all clinical activities. Create a culture of care that stresses therapeutic solutions to crisis. Under the direction of the Shift Supervisor and Therapist, help to create and establish a living environment that is positive for the clients through implementing the client's Individualized Behavioral Support Plan and assisting the MHS to implement it as well. Actively participate in clinical staff meetings and communicate regarding the delivery of treatment services to the house or unit residents. Assistant Supervisors will speak with their Shift Supervisor and Therapist concerning the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions, based on observations, and work with the Shift Supervisor to develop ideas on implementation of any ideas. Implement with fidelity all personalized interventions indicated in each resident's Master Plan of Care and assist the MHS with understanding and implementing interventions Maintain the structure, cleanliness and organization of the house or unit while providing direction and supervision to MHS through example and as assigned by the Shift Supervisor. Implement the agency's milieu model with fidelity and help MHS understand the milieu. Provide life skill training to residents as a routine matter in the course of daily living in the house or unit. Interact positively with residents, their family members, fellow staff members and all other stakeholders. Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Must have a fundamental love for children and a desire to be an agent for change in their lives. Must have empathy for others and practice the Golden Rule in relationships with residents and their families, with fellow staff member and with others. Must possess a strong work ethic, proven leadership ability, and the desire to have an influential role with staff and residents. Must possess strong leadership skills to promote staff unity, staff morale and cooperative relationships among various agency departments. Must be actively pursuing a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree in a mental health-related field (including, but not limited to sociology, criminal justice, nursing, marriage and family counseling, rehabilitation counseling, psychological counseling and other professional counseling); or Have earned a Bachelor's degree and is a student pursuing a graduate degree in a mental health-related field and have completed at least two courses in that identified field; or Have a high school degree or a GED and have two years of experience providing direct services in a mental health, physical health, social services, educational or correctional setting. Must possess a strong sense of personal authority, maturity and integrity for a positive, influential role with children. Must be able to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, in a diverse range of audiences and settings. Must be skilled in conflict resolution and mediation. Must have strong verbal and social skills for use with residents and staff. Must be committed to the protection of confidential information, records and reports. Must be flexible enough to handle the demands of an MHS position while also being responsible for additional supervisory duties as assigned. Must be able to create professional boundaries that allow for impartiality in supervision, discipline, and reward.
