Sergeant is responsible to the Deputy Director and Director of Campus Safety for the protection of life and property on the McDaniel College campus. The supervision of work of the officers and the delivery of campus protection and safety services through these officers are the primary duty of the supervisor. This position is assigned shifts variably, and is expected to be available for occasional overtime, and holiday work. Training, both on campus in-service and off site, is assigned or available. This is a safety sensitive position and pre-employment and random drug testing are required. The criticality of error in this position is VERY HIGH and all tasks (including routine) tasks must be done with precision. Key Responsibilities Supervise officers and operations during assigned shifts to ensure effective campus safety services Deploy personnel and equipment to support crime prevention and patrol activities Oversee daily shift operations and ensure incidents are properly documented and investigated Review and maintain accurate departmental records, reports, and logs Monitor officer performance and complete counseling or disciplinary documentation as needed Actively patrol campus property and perform line-officer duties when required Perform dispatch and administrative tasks to support department and college operations Lead and manage a mission-critical specialty area (e.g., Investigations, EMS, Training, or Community Outreach) Serve as an on-call supervisor for line staff on a rotating basis and remain reachable by cell phone Act as a Mandatory Reporter/Campus Security Authority for crime reporting Promote the department as a service-oriented resource for the campus communityRequirements:
2 years experience with McDaniel College as an O-2 or O-3; or 5 years, with another security/law enforcement department (college preferred) 2 of which must be as a supervisor; or 5 years in another emergency service agency. High School Diploma/GED required (Associate's Degree or equivalent college credits preferred). Experience may be substituted for academic study. Certification by a police supervisory school within one year of hiring (may be delayed by lack of program availability) Certification from a law enforcement basic training program within a year of appointment. Mastery in a collateral area as demonstrated by documented experience or issuance of advanced certification (ex. Instructor, FTO, EMS, Defensive Tactics Instructor, Community Outreach, Evidence/property management, Investigations, etc.). Three years of consecutive evaluations where no more than one individual area is a 1 (needs improvement). Ability to work during evenings and weekends. Position is classified as essential and incumbent must be able to report during extreme weather events when called to duty.Experience with:
completion of assignments (often stressful) in a timely manner, management of multiple extremely detailed events simultaneously, communication with various college and neighborhood constituencies, maintenance of close work relationships with subordinates, possession of exceptional written and oral communication skills. Must be able to maintain a departmentally approved first aid/CPR/AED certification. Must maintain a valid vehicle operator's license with two or less points. Must be able to hold a Special Police Commission. Must be able to wear a respirator (i.e., N95), with required medical evaluation and annual fit testing. Physical Characteristics Officers in Campus Safety may be exposed to Potential Infectious Materials or Hazardous Materials in the delivery of Campus Safety services such as: first aid, order maintenance, etc.Examples of these substances include:
blood, bodily fluids, "OC" spray, etc. Officers are trained in handling incidents that involve such exposures and protocols are documented in the Campus Safety Guidelines. Officers must maintain the ability to run, jump, squat, kneel, minimally dead-lift 50 lbs., drag a least 150 lbs., have vision and hearing within normal limits necessary for completing essential job tasks. Ability to pass a random drug screen.Additional Information:
