Job Description
Situated on the west bank of the Hudson River in West Haverstraw, NY, the Bowline Point Generation Station comprises two dual-fuel natural gas and oil-fired boilers, along with two GE steam turbine units, providing a combined capacity of 1169 megawatts. The plant has been a significant source of electricity for the region and has undergone upgrades to meet environmental regulations, ensuring its continued role in maintaining grid stability. Opportunity Summary The Shift Supervisor at Bowline Point Generation Station plays a vital role in ensuring the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of the plant by overseeing daily activities and managing personnel. This position is responsible for maintaining compliance with safety and environmental regulations, optimizing plant performance, and leading response efforts during operational upsets. Through strong leadership and technical expertise, the Shift Supervisor drives continuous improvement, enhances team development, and ensures the facility meets production and dispatch requirements. Your scope of responsibility as Shift Supervisor will include the following primary functions: Supervise all plant operations to ensure production and dispatch requirements are met in accordance with best practices. Assign specific tasks to shift employees to meet operational objectives. Ensure the plant operates within design limits to satisfy dispatch and/or steam delivery requirements as prescribed in the approved operating plan. Conduct orderly shift turnovers with the next Shift Supervisor. Perform operational tests on equipment as directed. Evaluate plant performance, analyze operating conditions and efficiencies, and implement or recommend improvements. Report upset conditions or other anomalies in plant status to the Maintenance Manager. In the case of an upset, take appropriate actions to return the plant to service as soon as possible while adhering to Prudent Utility Practices. Act as Emergency Response Coordinator when warranted. Maintain accurate entries in the Supervisor's Log as required. Participate in the selection and interviewing process for vacant positions, recommending appropriate actions to senior plant management. Supervise the training and qualification of new operators. Continuously evaluate the performance of assigned personnel and complete performance evaluations as the "Reporting Senior" in accordance with NAES policies and processes. Initiate Constructive Discipline actions for inadequate performance, involving Senior Management as necessary. Supervise the completion of routine inspections and assigned tasks to support contractual and regulatory requirements. Manage shift and plant safety programs, including Lockout/Tagout, Confined Space, and Hazardous Materials Controls programs. Oversee Environmental Compliance Programs, ensuring all operations meet permit requirements and reporting any upsets or exceedances in accordance with established procedures. Develop and submit "Lessons Learned" for internal use and dissemination to other NAES plants. Complete additional tasks as assigned by the Operations Manager. Effectiveness in carrying out this responsibility is part of the evaluation of each Supervisor's performance. Working Relationships The Shift Supervisor reports to the Operations Manager and receives guidance from other plant management. This role involves supervising and overseeing plant shift personnel, as well as coordinating with other plant employees. Physical Requirements and Working Conditions Physical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, climbing stairs and ladders, working from elevated platforms and walkways at varying heights, and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds. Power plant environment that may involve entering confined spaces, crawling through narrow areas, and handling hazardous materials, with exposure to fumes, extreme temperatures, and noise. Work may include high heat near equipment and varying outdoor weather conditions. Some duties may require the use of protective equipment, which can include hard hats, safety glasses, and eye protection, air masks/respirators, ear protection, chemical suits, flame-resistant clothing (FRC), hot gloves, high-voltage protective gear, and fall protection. Fit testing for respirators may be required. Strict smoking restrictions apply in and around the facility. Fitness for Duty All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening. Work Schedule The Shift Supervisor works rotating day and night shifts on a 24/7 schedule, consisting of 8-hour shifts Monday through Thursday and 12-hour shifts on weekends. Position requires extended working hours and varied shifts with the possibility of weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, workload, and plant conditions. "On call" status will periodically be required. Compensation This position offers an annual base salary ranging from $130,000 to $140,000, is eligible for an annual performance-based bonus, and provides straight-time on overtime hours worked. Operational Expertise and Leadership Competencies We are looking for a results-oriented supervisor with experience in the operations and maintenance of power generating facilities, coupled with a track record of leadership, career development, and operational success. Ability to understand procedures and instructions specific to the area of assignment as would be acquired in four years of high school. Associate degree in a technical field desirable. Proven track record as a highly experienced Control Room Operator in a power plant or similar industrial setting, with expertise in monitoring and controlling plant operations, responding to alarms, and ensuring operational efficiency. Comprehensive understanding of power plant operations, including normal operations, upset conditions, and regulatory compliance at federal, state, and local levels. Demonstrated ability to oversee and provide functional direction to plant O&M personnel, including effective supervision of shift personnel and coordination with other plant employees. Experience in managing plant scheduling, manpower loading, and maintenance planning and execution to ensure efficient plant operations and maintenance activities. Strong commitment to safety with the ability to implement and enforce site safety requirements, identify hazards, and take corrective actions as necessary. Proficiency in writing, reviewing, and revising operating procedures to ensure adherence to regulatory requirements and operational best practices. Excellent communication skills to conduct plant tours, provide clear direction and feedback to employees, report plant status to management, and collaborate effectively with various departments and stakeholders.
