Job Description

This opportunity is at Kutztown Area School District Lead Custodian 2nd Shift, Full-time The Kutztown Area School District in partnership with ESS is seeking a full-time Lead Custodian to start on or after August 1, 2026. This is a 12 month position working from 2:30pm-11:00pm during academic year and 6:00am-2:30pm during the summer. The Lead Custodian is responsible for the overall management and performance of the 2nd shift custodial operations, primarily at the high school.
REQUIREMENTS
Experience:
Three years experience in custodial work environment with school experience preferred
Education:
GED/High School Diploma (preferred) Ability to read, write and understand written and verbal instructions for cleaning, maintenance and safety procedures
Certification:
Valid PA Drivers' License; insurable by district's insurance carrier PA Department of Education Form 6004: Arrest/Conviction Report and Certification

RESPONSIBILITIES
Follows routine cleaning and maintenance procedures to maintain a high standard of safety, cleanliness and efficiency of building operations, and other related duties as assigned. Reads and abides by the Pennsylvania School laws and regulations, Federal and State aws, and regulations governing educational and civil rights of students and others, Child Protective Services Act, the policies of the Board of Education, administrative manuals, and the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Assist in the selection, assignment, scheduling and training of the building custodial staff Monitor the time reporting of all custodial employees in their section Evaluate the performance of the custodial staff on a scheduled basis. Inspect building daily through a standardized checklist Schedule and conduct meetings with custodians for purposes of training, retraining and leadership. Tour building on a regular basis and confer with the Director of Facilities and Operations or his/her designee regarding work schedules and procedures. Perform daily inspections that are established as an integral part of the operational program and provide written reports to the supervisor, including weekends and holidays Direct and control established schedules and procedures for the cleanliness and maintenance in all areas of the building, following district standards. Exhibit professionalism and courtesy to fellow workers, other department members, teachers, students and parents. Direct and control the priorities of the custodial staff workload. Maintain the inventory of supplies and equipment. Promote personal safety, safety procedures, and a safe working environment for all employees. Follow all safety codes and standards. Promote teamwork and interaction with fellow staff members with professionalism. Respond to emergency situations that are observed or requested. Perform basic functions of building maintenance, including plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry Initiate work orders for needed maintenance items. Supervise the physical security of the building in regards to locking and unlocking the facilities. Maintain appropriate personal appearance and hygiene. Maintain a clean, safe and well-organized work environment in the campus facilities. Perform lawn mowing, weeding, pruning, and leaf removal around building perimeter. Remove snow from sidewalks and salt paved areas. Perform all other duties as assigned by the Director of Facilities and Operations.
Competencies:
Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to operate cleaning equipment and supplies and have ability to instruct others in this responsibility. Knowledge of basic techniques of minor repairs and building maintenance. Basic computer knowledge involving company email, the building automation system, work order system, and inventory control.
Mental Demands:
Reading, writing and understanding written and verbal instructions, patience when working.
Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
Strenuous walking, standing, and/or climbing; heavy lifting required up to forty-five (45) pounds unassisted, reaching above shoulders, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing and pulling required daily. Frequent district-wide travel.

WORKING CONDITIONS
: Work is both outside and inside; exposure to hot and cold temperatures; exposure to dust, toxic chemicals and materials; slippery or uneven walking surfaces; work on ladders required; may work alone.

Vacuum, floor scrubber, buffing machine, carpet extractor, push and riding mower, weed wacker, leaf blower, walk behind snow blower.
