Job Description

Job Summary Heritage Rail Bikes is seeking dependable, safety-focused Rail Bike Tour Guides / Operations Assistants to help run daily rail bike tours. This is an active, hands-on outdoor role that combines guest service, equipment handling, safety oversight, and practical problem solving. Team members are responsible for welcoming guests, explaining safety procedures, assisting riders, guiding tours, moving rail bikes on and off the track, preparing rail bikes for each ride, and helping keep the operation running smoothly. This position requires working outdoors in a variety of conditions, including heat, rain, cold weather, and darkness. Reliability, punctuality, and good judgment are essential quailities for any potential candidate. Key Responsibilities Greet guests and create a friendly and welcoming environment for all. Assist with check-in, waiver confirmation, and tour preparation. Ready rail bikes before each tour, including cleaning, staging, positioning, and operational checks. Provide clear safety instructions before each tour. Help guests safely board and exit rail bikes. Guide guests throughout the ride and monitor the group during the tour. Move rail bikes on and off the track as needed. Safely lift, push, pull, and maneuver rail bikes and related equipment. Assist with turning, staging, spacing, and positioning rail bikes. Help keep tours running on schedule. Work outdoors during daytime and evening tours, including in low-light or dark conditions (for evening rides). Monitor guest behavior and enforce safety rules when necessary. Identify and report equipment issues, track concerns, guest incidents, or operational problems. Use good judgment and problem-solving skills when issues occur during tours. Communicate clearly with managers, coworkers, and guests. Help with opening and closing procedures. Keep loading areas, equipment areas, and guest spaces clean, organized, and safe. Requirements Candidates must be able to: Be reliable, punctual, and ready to work scheduled shifts. Safely perform the physical requirements of the role, including co-lifting heavy rail bikes, pushing, pulling, and maneuvering rail bikes and related equipment. Work outdoors in varying conditions, including heat, rain, cold weather, wind, and darkness. Stand, walk, bend, reach, peddle, and remain active for extended periods (including in warm weather). Communicate clearly and professionally with guests. Follow safety procedures and enforce rules when needed. Think on their feet and solve basic operational problems. Stay calm under pressure. Work well as part of a team. Maintain a positive and professional attitude with guests and coworkers. Helpful Experience Prior experience in any of the following is helpful but not required : Outdoor recreation Attractions or tourism Hospitality or guest services Summer camps Mechanical, maintenance, or equipment handling work Event operations Railroad, bike, climbing, boating, or any adventure recreation environments Schedule This is a seasonal position (operating from June through late-October/mid-November) with shifts based on the tour schedule. Weekend, evening, and holiday availability may be required. Because tours depend on adequate staffing, reliability and punctual attendance are essential. Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate is dependable, steady under pressure, and comfortable working outdoors in less-than-perfect conditions. They are friendly with guests, helpful with coworkers, and able to balance safety, guest service, and hands-on operational work throughout the day.
